The left wing of the SNP in the 70s >no-one's ever heard of them? It's semi-widely known that they existed and that Salmond was a member. The only reason that you've "never heard of them" is that you probably didn't care enough to read into the history of the SNP to find out, because it's not particularly important. You probably don't know who the Beveridge Group, Tribune group, the manifesto group, etc are either.
Pretty funny how people are astonished how groups can manipulate politics whilst on a discussion board famous for manipulating politics

As a matter of fact, many members of the 79 Group went on to attain senior positions within the Scottish Government in 2007.

>Thatcher said NO in 79 If you mean the devolution referendum, that was under Callaghan. Though Thatcher did say "A no vote doesn't have to kill devolution", although even though they got a narrow yes vote it did.
Michael Foot interestingly wanted to push the repeal of the devolution act until after the next election (months away at the time) but everyone knew the game was up.
It's not particularly interesting or noteworthy history. It's less interesting than Donald Stewart. (Who was one of two SNP MPs to survive the 1979 election.)
Well yeah, while they were a bit far to the left ("it was the style at the time") to begin with, their basic strategy was the only sane one for the party to adopt. A "Independence, then work out what we want to do" policy would have seen the party languish on 2 seats forever instead of displacing Labour as a dominant political force.

Just posted this in the old thread not realising you guys had moved :
I work for a company that makes polythene bags. Among our products are bespoke disposable body bags we sell to the MOD, they order every year, usual between 20 and 40k bags total. This week an order was brought out for 600k of these bags, at usual full length, and 240k at just over 1 metre in length. I work a machine, not in the office, i dont know if our company has an NDA or anything like that but i probably shouldnt be saying anything anyway, I just thought it was weird as fuck the MOD all of a sudden wants a massive amount of these bags plus a new child size variant we never produced before.
This order is by far the biggest single order the company has ever taken and will have an extruder and converter running it exclusively until completion, there is some urgency here, usually orders over 20k get split up and despatched bit by bit.
Im kinda concerned.

Who else legitimately thinks this would make a pretty good Brit/pol/ theme?

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-23355531 >Senior civil servants repeatedly warned Margaret Thatcher about the risks of giving Jimmy Savile a knighthood in the 1980s, one describing the broadcaster as a "strange and complex man".
>The heavily redacted papers show that Lady Thatcher first wrote to Sir Robert Armstrong, the most senior civil servant in the country at the time and chair of the honours committee, about the issue of a knighthood for Savile in 1983. >The prime minister raised the matter again just months later but Sir Robert said "lurid details" were unlikely to be have been forgotten and it "would be best if Mr Savile were to wait a little longer". >After further requests were also turned down, the prime minister's private secretary Nigel Wicks wrote to Sir Robert in 1986 saying that she was "most disappointed that Mr Savile's name has not been recommended". >Sir Robert's successor, Sir Robin Butler, refused another request from No 10 in 1987, suggesting that to honour Savile would "not benefit the honours system in the eyes of the public". >The documents released cover all correspondence between ministers and civil servants on the issue. >They do not shed any light on why, after repeated refusals, Savile was finally awarded a knighthood in 1990 - weeks after Lady Thatcher stood down as PM.

>why did he get a knighthood? I don't know so here's my ad-hoc theory: Thatcher wanted to embarrass the Queen when it all came out, because she was always angry she couldn't have the top job.
