The moon has approximately 1/6th Earth gravity. You definitely need a rocket, but not a very big one.
There's also no atmospheric drag to worry about, which further reduces the delta-v needed to get off the surface.
Also, just because they had thin sheet metal and mylar foil on the exterior of the lander does not mean the pressure vessel was made of tin foil.
