Literally no argument. Wind and solar power are not enough

...

Fund the nuclear power lobby out of spite.

Both of those things are valid though
Wind isn't consistently powerful and the sun only provides power for half of the day
Both require huge batteries to function well

Grid storage via batteries is the future, quite a few prototyping systems are already in use in California

But the only thing untrue is the clean in front of coal and that's more of a goal than a reality

Molten salt generators can often work overnight

>Dumbasses don't know Americans invented science

>coal
>clean
call me when it's not the most polluting method of power generation on the planet

>cali
>implying you'd get enough energy from wind and solar to even store in the first place

There were many clean coal prototypes ready for the market before the Feds regulated the entire industry.

Improved battery storage won't change the fact that wind and solar are just physically inefficient - we can improve designs, we can improve storage, we can improve distribution, but you can't overcome the physical limitations on conversion and space efficiency.

Picture isn't wrong though.

It's very expensive to move power around and store it (light you would need to do at night with solar). Wind and Solar cannot displace Coal and Natural Gas.

Nuclear is our only option.

Clean coal usually refers to the use of carbon capture and catalytic converters to scrub the emissions or coal gasification, which is generally pretty expensive to do and not that clean
Well apparently they do since the systems are in place. Tesla builds them

>muh thorium meme

You have absolutely zero scientific knowledge on this matter beyond poorly made infographics. Visit /sci/ and ask about thorium

Northeast PA (coal country) here. The mines have been going out of business since the 60's and it has nothing to do with the EPA, which was founded in the 70's.
The mines were being exhausted. The easy-to-mine coal was gone and what was left in the ground was prohibitively expensive.

And nowadays, PA has so much natural gas, which is way more profitable than coal, that all the energy jobs are going in that arena.Fortunately, no state has made more money and generated more jobs during the natural gas boom than PA.

The real problem is that the mines required a thousand assholes with picks and shovels, the natural gas plants are automated and just need ten engineers. The jobs in natural gas all require college education whereas all you needed to become a miner was a willingness to get black lung.

What you see in OP's pic is an example of lazy fucking miners refusing to get off their lazy asses and get another job.

If we could install micro power turbines on all the penises of the men that fap to internet porn, we would have all the power we would ever need.

>clean coal
I want this meme to die. There is no such thing. Please die coal burning scum.

It would be an expensive start up to build a Solar Farm. But im sure over the years it would end up paying for itself since Solar Panels are getting cheaper.

Coal is the answer when power from limited sources to mass populated areas isnt enough. Not only that, but we export Coal as well.

>Well apparently they do since the systems are in place.
They don't even come close to displacing coal or natural gas.

/sci/ used to shill Thorium when I browsed it years ago. What changed?

Thorium is no more realistic an option right now than fusion is.

Until someone actually works around the engineering hurdles to come up with a viable, industrial-scale reactor design it's just another pipe dream.

Uranium fission works and it works well, it's the best mid-term solution until (hopefully) something like Thorium fission or sustainable fusion becomes an option later down the road.

burn the coal, pay the toll

Why aren't we mining the moon for helium ,random science user?

Thermodynamics caught up with them

>Well apparently they do

how many nuclear power plants power cali?

>engineering hurdles
They had a working prototype that clocked in 5000 working hours with emergency stops and restarts tested.

Fission won't happen in our lifetimes.

i refuse to believe that sign is real

Didnt a dying member of Apollo 17 say we were told never to return?

Enough to end all life on this planet

Should hold up about as well as the dams they build. Aren't they in the process of spending 100 million dollars on a railway no one will use and will likely get cancelled halfway through?

It costs a shit ton to get there. Most of the cost is just trying to get the fuel in the tanks off the ground. Space exploration would be extremely cheaper if we built a space elevator.

What did you mean by this?

>clean coal

Space niggers need to go back! WE NEED TO BUILD A WALL AROUND THE MOON! and make the space niggers pay for it

Water vapor and CO2 are the only byproducts of american coal plants. CO2 is not a pollutant.

...

>Coal is the answer
Nuclear should be the answer

You won't see space mining until it's competitive versus sourcing those materials from earth.

>actually relying on wind and solar instead of Thorium
You're one of the shitheads keeping us in this horrible in-between of energy sources. Kill yourself before you spread your ideas and hold us back even longer.

Still waiting for an argument against Thorium. None to be found.

Clean coal exists thought.

Nigger, the use of coal releases more radiation than a fucking nuclear power plant what are you talking about.

www3.epa.gov/radtown/coal-fired-power-plants.html

CO2 is a green house gas.
Water vapor is also a green house gas.
It does not have to be "toxic" to be a green house gas. As long as it traps heat it is a green house gas.
Also Mercury is a byproduct of coal.

well....

there is anthracite which is the "cleanest" relatively anyway

The Jews are trying to exhaust all their already in place facilities for energy before being forced to upgrade.

They hit the same wall nuclear scientists in the 1960 hit . Using saltwater as a catalyst in a nuclear reactor can cause a cascade effect that burns all fuel at once. IT's due to the unpredictability of an ever changing density and salt to water to foreign matter ratio cause by temperature variation and reactive fuel depletion. I assure you it's far more complicated then just that, but it's a start

It pisses me off so much that fucking hippy ass liberals killed the nuclear power industry. With new reactor designs the shit is safe as fuck. Instead we have a moratorium on building new reactors so we have a bunch of old technology operating right now.

Damn, you are a demanding pos liberal, go back to tumbler where the other trannies accept you

How safe would it be in attack?

By electing Donald Trump as President.

>/sci/ used to shill Thorium when I browsed it years ago. What changed?
They realized it doesn't make sense to base your energy platform on technology that hasn't been invented yet.

It's pointless until we actually get sustainable Hydrogen fusion working. It'd be like refining gasoline before the invention of the combustion engine.

5000 MWh not 5000 working hours. The prototype was operational, on and off, for a total of 636 hours, nearly 500 of which required chemical assistance to maintain the reaction. The bulk of that MWh mark comes from short-pulse operations where they managed to get reactions up to about 20 MW, but these weren't sustainable and would only last a few seconds at most. The bulk of the prototype's operation was in the 200 kW range (which is about 10% of what a typical large wind turbine does)

>wind depends on weather and good location
>sun depends on clear skies and can only work up to half of the time
>libshits expect these to power cities full of electric cars

We doen't want yer gadamn scientific communist energie we want gud ol fashin' kleen Americun cole because it takes care uv ar kids n ar chilrin and cole is from gawd but soler will let tha cammunists win.

If Global Warming happens then it happens. You think recycling your garbage is going to stop tornadoes then go ahead.

I should add that these pulse operations are common for nuclear prototype testing. My physics department has a stellerator that they do fusion experiments with, but it only sustains a fusion grade plasma for about a microsecond.

do not reply to one of my excellent post again my dude

Thank you for posting a concise argument.

Was ist deutschland?

>Muh terrorism
Considering that the US currently has 61 reactors in 30 states and we haven't had a problem yet I'm not worried.

>It pisses me off so much that fucking hippy ass liberals killed the nuclear power industry. With new reactor designs the shit is safe as fuck. Instead we have a moratorium on building new reactors so we have a bunch of old technology operating right now.

Hippies wanted to kill hydro electricity in Quebec during the 60s and 70s. Because of muh native sacred hunting grounds and muh burials. Quebec's electricity output is 96.8% hydroelectricity now. Another 2.9% is from other renewables, but the windmill farms are considered to be white elephants.

I don't think you understand how recycling works.

Your posts are subpar , also, I'm right and you never had an argument to begin with.

You can install 100%+ capacity and use the surplus to charge batteries or pump water into reservoirs.

...Is it just me or the coal miner guy on the left of the billboard is based on some Nazi propaganda poster? I could be wrong but still

Wait a damn minute. Everything you posted has to do with nuclear ramjets.

It's all fine and dandy until shit does actually hit the fan.

Even storing existing nuclear waste is "problematic" for liberals.

The new long-term storage facility at Yucca Mountain is done... like literally done... and yet it sits there completely unused because a bunch of hippies don't want to harm some rare semi-endangered turtle or some such nonsense.

You could just burn coal and pump the co2 into the ground

Pretty sure it is just a common motif.

LTFR reactors don't use salt water, your a fucking moron. You call random anons libshit when they have nothing libshit to say. Sit down.

To be fair, those look like shithuge reservoirs. Shame you don't habe mountains Quebec.

I understand but idiot libtards I know think that recycling helps stop global warming. All I say is if that makes you feel better go for it, just don't make me do it. I drive a gas guzzler, and leave all my lights on in the house 24/7

Yeah. The prototype thorium reactors weren't designed with industrial power generation in mind - they were designed with the idea of powering nuclear aircraft.

I don't think you grasp just how fucking HUGE nuclear power was in the 50s and 60s... we developed prototypes for a nuclear-powered car for fuck's sake.

Part of the reason we put giant fucking cement casings around our reactors is to prevent something from crashing in to them.

This

>wind dies, sun sets
Holy fucking shit lol.

>Literally no argument. Wind and solar power are not enough when half your adult population needs mobility scooters to get around the local Walmart

>how to coal miners recover

they don't
the price of physically mining a megawatt hour of coal isn't worth the price that I can sell a megawatt hour of energy for

the industry is failing and nothing can save it at this point

just let it die so we can retrain the miners and move on
jesus...

fluoride is a salt, you are trolling me now right?

>How will they ever recover?
They won't.

They should STFU and take their complaints to the natural gas industry, then use their grandpappys possum-getter to kill their families, then themselves.

Nigger that is one of the most retarded things I have ever read. Please enlighten me as to how it is going to be economically viable to "pump it in to the ground".

I don't see any mobility scooters in your pic of average mericans

Yes. But they didn't use water. The entire point of the design of the reactor was to get away from using water as a coolant.

With nuclear, thermal solar, fotovoltaic solar, eolic and hydraulic (dams not shiet) is more than enough

>you can store enough power to drive a car for a few miles, to sustain a house for a few hours, or other toy level stuff.
1 machine in a factory needs more power than a block in a city. It will never work with chemical batteries

Reminder to watch Pandora's Promise

youtube.com/watch?v=Sp1Xja6HlIU

That's what coal fire power plants have been doing for years now to reduce their co2 emissions

None of you actual research your arguments, this is fucking hilarious

this. I like trump but I certainly hope he realizes that coal is fucking over and dragging it out any longer is futile.

That's the trick - if you want to use alternatives as a replacement for fossil fuels, you can't afford to be picky. EVERYTHING needs to be on the table and ALL OF IT needs to be substantially overhauled.

>thinking Thorium is different than Uranium
What is a breeder reactor?
In layman's terms: Thorium eats a neutron, turns into Uranium, eats another neutron, then undergoes fission.

Therefore: Same fission products, slightly less efficiency due to the overall higher neutron flux required for a sustained nuclear reaction, subcritical multiplication is lower so it takes longer to bring the reactor critical again after a prolonged shutdown.

Pure fluoride (F2) is the most corrosive element in nature because it is the most elecronegative. Get your chemistry together, fluoride is not the Jew salt that Alex Jones talked about.

why not make robots mine the coal using solar energy to charge the bots

They're arguing that coal will meet the demand at night.

The problem is that natural gas fills that role much better.

Coal has about 5-10 years left before its more expensive than anything else.

Your the most pompous arrogant dickhead I've run across on Sup Forums, and that is saying something. And all that arrogance is quite misplaced.

That's because the way of the future is Nuclear energy.

it is a jew salt. It is a histamine that stains your teeth

It's irrelevant either way, I was discussing the molten salt reactor of the 1960's, the original application of the thorium reactor, not it's 4th gen failures .But I'll let that one slide, since you are googling what I'm talking about as fast as you can , and getting 90% of your data from Wikipedia

Literally nothing wrong with that. Why is the left so non-inclusive? They are so prejudice against certain cultures who don't want to bother anyone, yet are constantly attacked because of their dress, their accent, and their countryside way of life.

Of course, and in the process of changing the productive model expect huge price increases, here in Spain we have 30% renewable sources and the kWh is 0.12€ (that's a lot)

Maybe in fucking iceland but it hasn't been tried on any large scale in the US and it is believed to have the same risks as fracking. Why the fuck are you faggots clinging to a dying form of energy capture.
>Muh coal jobs
Like I give a fuck.
