Scientists are reporting raised iodine levels in the atmosphere which may indicate a nuclear test, but a nuclear device that produces the isotope in question also produce a shit load of others - none of which are present at elevated levels. Mostly likely reason is an incident at an iodine plant or nuclear facility.

I doubt it's a monster, but think of it like this. If an alien life form visited Earth without any immunization, they would die pretty fucking fast from all the random bugs we have floating around here that we've been immunized to over the years.
That's how the anglos killed the majority of the American indians. It's how indigenous tribes die when they make first contact w/outside world, etc.
Now imagine a time capsule from a really fucking long time ago, or even from another planet, crashed into the ice and buried in the Arctic. As soon as it's uncovered we'd face a worldwide epidemic that would wipe out a sizable portion of the population (the strong would adapt and survive), and it could be something as harmless as the common cold.
It will be a reset for Earth. A culling of the herd, so to speak.
