Well you could weave a Soros like character into the game. Would work wonders as a BBG that is a merchant or a wizard, that presents outwardly a humanitarian look but is responsible for the destabilization of the kingdom.
Considering that Soros is practically a real life litch, a bit of organ harvesting can be thrown in to it for thematics.

You could weave into it both Brexit and/or the Greek debt scenario if you can understand the issues.
