The problem with brazil has little to do with the colonization, as it happened centuries ago.
what fucked up Brazil is that our State is so shit. We had an Empire, with nobility and all, but when the emperor defied the economic elites, they took the power to themselves, abolished the nobility (they proclaimed the Republic) but essentially kept the privileges. Thus the politician oligarchies were born and some rule the country to this day.
Today, working in the high ranks of the government is not unlike being part of a superior caste. Not many of the high bureaucrats work hard, it absorbs almost every good brain in the country (cause everyone wants the wages and benefits that the public work offers). As for the private sector, almost everything is mate to suck people dry from their incomes and profits, there like ten thousand labor laws (including the jurisprudece), an unknown number of tributary laws (not even kidding) and one of the least efficient states yet with one of the highest taxes, in the entire world. I know this because i worked with that - a bunch of lawsuits from employees can ruin a corporation of any size.
Man if i were to describe every shit aspect about brazil's history and laws i'd write a book. And i'm not even talking about the social values and the elitist guetto culture that's being developed since the 90s
