President Trump intends to cut the Coast Guard's funding by over a billion dollars, cancelling the construction of a new cutter and potentially dismantling the Coast Guard's counter-terrorism assets
As the man who ran as the counter-terrorist candidate we need to stop him from doing this.
I'm not anti-Trump by any stretch of the word, this is the first thing he's done that I disagree with.

Coast Guard are LE trained, they have maritime security operations, can operate overseas, and do drug interdiction and detain criminals/illegal immigrants. With all that being said I'm arguing that their funding SHOULD be cut. I know personally how wasteful they are.
Coastguard doesn't actually do that much. I can't think of anything they currently do other than conducting ocean rescue missions and assisting law enforcement in stopping boats bringing in drugs.

For some clarification guys, I mainly want to use the Coast Guard as a starting position. I like it's concept so I want to start there. If the means present themselves I want to move into other sectors of military and law enforcement afterwards. I don't really like anything available in the civilian world desu.
I used to think that HITRON unit was cool. But you have to be a 2nd-tour officer to join it I hear. and I'm not that optimistic.
Ranger would be a good option then. Army in general I suppose.
I didn't say aviation because I have no idea what the guy is into. but based on I would imagine I was right to say get on a cutter. You can do all the LE training and shit there. Med/High endurance or a national security cutter. Just be prepared to be gone for months on end, so I would suggest not being in a relationship if you do get put on one of those.

That said the pumpkinheads do need new ships and to answer few more things about them.
1. They are part of the DOD on loan to the DHS
2. They are regularly deployed to the middle east and regularly conduct boardings of ships there.
3. Their ships are so old a decrepid it will cost more to continue using them than replacing them with more modern fuel efficent and automated ships would.

No, they don't do shit. Seriously, it blows if you are ACTUALLY wanting to do something meaningful. Lucky for you most people get put on cutters after basic. What you need to do is research where the National Security cutters are largely in port, and during basic you will get to request 3 locations you would like to be stationed (they consider those when assigning you). Write down 3 locations where you would have the best chance of getting placed on one and then you're good.
I was thinking going in as a Gunner's Mate. Law Enforcement Specialist or whatever they're called sounds neat and all but they need to shorten the waiting period, I heard from a Coast Guard Boot Camp channel that it can take 2 years to be approved for 'A' School for LES

If you're gunna go down spec ops, why not try for SF? It'll be shitty, but you'll do more cool guy stuff in that community. Either way, private security like blackwater n shit like both Ranger batt guys and SF dudes. Plus both contract paths will take you through infantry and airborne schools, which is the best if you don't wanna be a pog.
Just get in contact with them via email or telephone. They will buy you a bus/train ticket to go to wherever their recruiting offices are. Sometimes they'll put you up in a nice hotel overnight too before you leave. Not always the case though so don't count on it.

It is a branch. They're considered military during times of war and sometimes deployed alongside naval units. During peacetime, they're considered law enforcement.
