Never, ever pay with large bills first thing in the morning. The hourly-wage punk at the counter can not access more change than he has in the register without shutting down the front operations for 5 minutes, IF there is even a manager there (my manager was never there when I worked at a gas station as a teen)
Every morning, you start with a set number of bills in your till. Such as

>10x$5
>40x$1
and it takes about 30-50 customers before there is enough padding there to start breaking huge bills. If they have to break 3 $100 bills first thing in the morning, their till is done. They can't break anything else for any customers. They have to go credit-cards-only until a bunch of people pay with exact change.
