The Egyptians are not white and they were not black. They didn't have a smidgen of either of those things in them, either. They are exactly the same goddamn people today as they were 5,000 years ago. Don't buy the bullshit "Arab" meme; "Arab" is just a language group (Arabic is barely single coherent language) and cultural identity. When Muslim Arabs invaded and conquered Egypt, the amount of intermixing was minimal as the Egyptian population is massive. Scholars tend to classify the ancient Egyptians as "Afro-Asiatic" or "Hamitic" peoples, whatever the fuck that means.
As for skin color, usually, the Egyptians depicted all males as one color and all females as one color. However, every once in a while there were notable exceptions; Nubians or people of Nubian descent were obviously depicted as being black, and some wealthy Lower Egyptians (from the north) for some reason decided to have their coffins painted with really, really fair skin; I have personally seen one of these coffins in a museum in San Diego and it shocked me. The dude must have been as pale and white as me.
It does seem to be the same case back then as it is today; the skin color in native Egyptians goes from lighter to darker as you go from north to south, until you eventually inevitably end up with people that look nearly indistinguishable from the black Nubians across the border in Sudan. So naturally, in places like Cairo and other big cities in modern Egypt today where Egyptians travel to from all parts of the country in addition to foreigners from all over the world, you're going to see a fucking rainbow of human skin colors. It is truly perplexing. Trust me. Go find pictures, I dare you. It's just the way it is.
The truth of the matter is, Egypt, and really the Near East as a whole doesn't fit very well into the Western notion of race. What the fuck even are other "Arab" peoples? How about the berbers of north Africa? People like the tuaregs?
