Actually, EWS is a culmination of Kubrick's development and is beautifully shot and paced. I think it's better than the movies everyone always talks about as his best. It's his most mature work in more ways than one, which is why little kids tend to prefer the directness of FMJ and make absurd statements like calling EWS a "porno".
