It was a weird form of socialism. Yugoslavia was a geographic wonder, with Vojvodina (the north) full of amazingly fertile farmland that could feed the entire country, and an insane amount of factories and production.
The reason he's considered a socialist is because once you were fresh out of highschool, you were required to serve in the military. After that, you could either go to a University for free or go to a tradeschool for free. The State took care of schooling, jobs, pensions, and healthcare.
After you worked for X years, you ahd a pension and an apartment given to you by the government. You could call it socialism only because there wasn't an entirely open capitalist system, you weren't allowed to have a monopoly on any goods.

Tito told Stalin to fuck himself vvery openly, the most famous letter exchange between the two of them being a letter Tito sent to Stalin: "Stop sending people to kill me.
