You don't pay and then make friends, you make friends and then chip in money together to rent/buy a nice house to have parties in. Fraternities are one of the last places left in Western society (at least in civilian life), where men can just hang out with men and develop strong ties. I won't pretend that it builds character or some shit, but it certainly is a lot of fun and it helped me with my social skills.

I don't know if you realize, but there are plenty of fraternities that count their ages in centuries. The oldest fraternity started in 1776, months after America came into being. My own started in 1855, which is not old, but still older than my own fucking country. The "Greek" thing is more to do with borrowing the Greek alphabet than it has to do with implying Greek lineage. It's a wholly American phenomenon, and as such, its history is intertwined with American history.

I can tell you we've existed in the USA since 1869. That's all I can say.

I'm not a burger, but I'll explain how I joined. If you had told high-school-me that university-me was going to join a fraternity, he would have laughed in your face. So, when two of my best friends and roommates told me they were going to join a fraternity to "network", I literally laughed in their faces.

After they joined up, they invited me to the party that they and their pledge class had organized and I had a sincerely great time. I got to know some of the guys in the fraternity, and found that they were all great guys that I would likely befriend regardless of whether or not there was a fraternity.

So why bother with a fraternity? Why not just be friends? Well, that's what I was for a while. I'd come and hang out at the house and attend parties and have a good time, but never bothered joining or paying dues. I would say the main difference between a fraternity and a regular group of friends is that a fraternity has more organization, and everyone chips in cash every semester so that you can have a big house and have good parties. I joined because I made a lot of good friends and I felt like I may as well chip in. As a bonus, I can get free accommodation in most major American cities with a handshake, rent at the house was incredibly cheap for it's location across the street from campus, and for some reason, there are actually women who will suck your dick because you're in a frat.

It's true (minus the relationship part) for most of my fraternity. Since I've already revealed my frat I won't reveal my campus, but I assure you it's not a shitty school. I've also never received any of those remarks, other than sarcastically from my own brothers. You'd be surprised how little of an effect having money has on these people.
