Jihad is a concept as old as Islam itself. INTERNATIONAL islamic terrorism is the only thing that's new because prior to international travel Islamic Terrorism was only a regional issue.

Jihad is a rule of Islam that orders every Muslim state to wage war against the west (Christians). That went on until the title of caliphate was abolished in the early 20th century, but then it was taken back as soon as the Muslim world got strong enough to fight back. War against the west is a defining characteristic of Islam, they just calmed down during the mid 20th century.
