I'm trying to fully understand why a 30 year old man making $40,000 a year can't support a family of 4(Him, wife, 2 kids) on his salary alone.
In 1950 the average wage for white men was $18,000. Converted to today's dollar that would be $181,944 due to inflation.

One of my coworkers is 22 and has a roomate and still pays 500 more than me for a smaller apartment.
