Yeah, it's not like the main switch occurred after the deregulation of capital movements (Britain was 1979 for reference, though the USA were earlier.) and Banking (Mostly under Carter in the 70s-early 1980 stateside, Thatcher into the 80s here.) and other sectors.
Admittedly, neoliberalism does involve large elements of state-private collusion (like the ruinously expensive PFI schemes to build schools, etc here based on the assumption that governments are inherently incompetent and private contractors inherently efficient, or the way the Euro was essentially designed to remove fiscal policy as an option for ending recessions.) but it's not for nothing that the postwar period generally involved government having both hands around the necks of capital-and-bankers.

What is your operational definition of crony capitalism? Corporations getting laws rewritten in their favor? This has been going on forever, because when you have a ton of money, you can simply purchase a favorable government, or hold the government hostage for favorable policies. The world has an oversupply of labor, so corporations can simply say "Change the laws for me or I flee to another country and you lose re-election."
If you actually wanted "capitalism in the service of the nation" it will look a whole lot more like the PRC or USSR than the US. The State can't flee to another country, after all. In short, better build those walls.
