Russia isn't necessarily "friends" with NK but if they didn't respond in this situation they would lose their only powerful allies, and be left with just Syria and Iran.
It would seem that it'd make more strategic sense for Putin to respond with his nukes, but then theirs the questions of: How many Russian nukes are fit for service? Is killing that many billions worth it? etc. I mean Russians, despite how I despise them, don't seem to want Nuclear Armageddon, or else the world would've ended during the Cold War.

Well, China only has around 20 or so nukes, so that's not enough to destroy the U.S. in the first place, and they would also likely be able to destroy some, before they landed. But even if they couldn't, Russia would still have to deal with, South Korea, Japan, Turkey, Israel, UK, France, Germany, and possibly India or Pakistan. All of which are military powers.
China and North Korea, have been military and economic, allies for years. Also if North Korea fell, the U.S. would also have a significantly stronger presence in Asia, which would hurt China.

There were still some delusions up about western animals during Cold War and the perspective of peaceful coexistence seemed possible. North Korea won't launch anything on anyone because they know the US is just itching for a reason to fuck them up. They will posture like they will and will have a very limited capability to launch some missiles and nukes at South Korea because they need to project the illusion of strength to their citizens.
