Its not a matter of being confident enough to repel the USAF. They could do it easily with the assets they have. Its the fallout from destroying US planes that becomes the issue. The US would demand a proportional response at minimum, which would require destroying Russian planes and the AA groups that attacked them. That in turn demands a Russian response, which would escalate to the destruction of US ships and airbases in the region that had attacked them. It spirals downward from there. Shooting shit down is fine, its what comes after that is the problem. You want to be sure it is absolutely worth it and there are no other options before you do.

Yes as previously posted picture suggested. But I'd change the desert part. SAA should ignore that and instead rush for DeZ as soon as Damascus-Palmyra highway is secured. There's only one road to DeZ that isn't hard as fuck and involving going through dozens of ISIS held-towns and villages with large garrisons so if the SAA secure it before any US-backed rebels it's good night for their hopes of getting to DeZ first.
I'd say it's one they have to act on and soon. Even at the expense of abandoning all but a defensive line in north Homs.
