Spain and Britain tried to use the opportunity of the French revolution to steal the island, well the French part of it anyway. So they went in and armed the French royalists and ex slaves, they eventually even sent a huge army to close the deal.
When the slaves and mulattos got what they wanted, Britain was told to get the fuck out because they wanted to negociate with France.
Instead of being smart, Napoleon listened to his wife and tried to reinstate slavery, at that point white and mulattos lost hold on the rebellion.
Almost the entire white population was masacrated and mulattos were persecuted and pushed aside from positions of powers.
