how come there are these massive areas of control being held in the middle of nowhere. For example, that huge area in the bottom left of this pic, east of Damascus. This whole place is FSA territory? And also, there are several places on this map where areas of control are almost surrounded by an opposing force That small green area just north of Homs is completely surrounded by SAA control. What's going on? How is it possible that areas like this are still holding out? At first I thought that it must have only been recently that the SAA pushed north and encircled this location, but it's been like this since at least 2015 according the the map timeline. having looked at different maps I can agree with some of your sentiment. many of the maps online make the distinction between country side and urban areas clear.
the controlled colour merely indicates that 'probably' the xcolour guys can be found here, with a likelyhood exceeding that of any of the other colours.
maps are intensely political constructs. the best that can be said is that your enemies maps tell the stories that he cannot deny.
and only your map shows reality on the ground as you understand it. if u read the comments on the map history of wikipedia u see all sorts of shit where someone knows that update is 'wrong' but submits it anyway. then some other comes along and removes it. ant then the first person apologises and says the change was made 'because they believed the map should've looked like they wanted it'.
