Turkey parliament confirms emergency extended until July 19 Turkey’s parliament Tuesday confirmed extending the state of emergency in place for nine months since last year’s failed coup by another three months to July 19, state media said. This means that the controversial measure, which has seen some 47,000 people arrested, will still be in place when Turkey marks the first anniversary of the July 15, 2016 failed putsch. The decision by parliament was seen as a formality after the move was backed by the cabinet Monday one day following the referendum granting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan additional powers. (AFP)

Yemen war needs a political solution - US defense secretary A political solution through UN-brokered negotiations is needed to resolve the conflict in Yemen, US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Tuesday as he made his first trip in the role to Saudi Arabia. At the same time, officials have said the US is considering deepening its role in the Yemen conflict by more directly aiding its Gulf allies, who are fighting Houthi rebels. At least 10,000 people have been killed and more than 3 million displaced in the war, now in its third year. Millions of people are also struggling to feed themselves. (Reuters)

Iraq opens new Tigris bridge escape route for people fleeing Mosul Iraqi’s army has built a new pontoon bridge over the Tigris river south of Mosul, after flooding had blocked all crossing points, opening an escape route for families fleeing fighting between government forces and Islamic State. On Friday, the army dismantled makeshift bridges linking the two parts of Mosul due to heavy rain, forcing residents leaving Iraq’s second-largest city to use small boats. The city’s permanent bridges have been largely destroyed during a six-month military campaign to seize back Mosul from the Sunni Muslim Islamists, which overran it in 2014. Long queues formed at the new bridge on Tuesday with families crossing in public buses, trucks and taxis. Aid shipments also resumed to the Hammam al-Alil camp, southwest of Mosul, the main arrival point for people fleeing the fighting. (Reuters)

Police helicopter carrying 12 crashes in eastern Turkey - officials Twelve people were killed when a Turkish police helicopter crashed in the eastern province of Tunceli on Tuesday, the local governor’s office said, blaming the crash on poor weather conditions. The helicopter was carrying a judge, seven police officers, one sergeant and three crew members, the Tunceli governor’s office said. Heavy fog in the region made the rescue operation for the Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk helicopter difficult, Turkish media reports said. (Reuters)

Hamas rejects ‘threats’ by Palestinian leader A senior Hamas official says threats by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cannot force the militant group to cede control in the Gaza Strip. Khalil al-Hayya said on Tuesday that Abbas’ threat to take “unprecedented steps” to restore political unity to the Palestinian territory will not succeed. Al-Hayya says “Gaza can’t be threatened or terrified and Hamas doesn’t accept threats.” The Islamic militant group seized Gaza from Abbas' Palestinian Authority in 2007. (AP)

Russia concerned over attempts ‘to distort situation around Idlib chemical incident’ Moscow is concerned over attempts by some countries to alter facts concerning the Idlib chemical incident and attempts to impose their narrative on the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Tuesday. Russia “with concern and alarm notes continuing attempts by some countries to deliberately distort the situation surrounding the incident in Khan Shaykhun on April 4, to in essence dictate the OPCW their hasty but very far-reaching conclusions,” Sputnik quoted Ryabkov as saying. “This is done more and more often in an unacceptably… provocative manner,” he added. Ryabkov also said Russia calls on the OPCW “to end fruitless public disputes over Syria,” TASS reports.

Turkey: Main opposition party files for referendum annulment Turkey’s prime minister on Tuesday called on the opposition to respect the result of a referendum that will give sweeping new powers to the office of the president, but the main opposition party formally requested the vote be annulled. Bulent Tezcan, deputy chairman of the opposition Republican People’s Party, or CHP, said the party filed a formal request seeking the referendum be annulled due to voting irregularities. He said the party would use all legal paths to challenge the vote. “We demand the cancellation of this referendum,” Tezcan said. The opposition has listed a series of irregularities, but has been particularly outraged by an electoral board decision announced late Sunday to accept ballots that didn’t bear the official stamps used to verify they are genuine. Mattis says N. Korea missile test meant to provoke A failed North Korean missile test over the weekend was an attempt by the reclusive country to “provoke something” but the US would work with China to try and reduce tensions, US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Tuesday. Speaking with reporters on his way to the Middle East, Mattis said the most recent test was not an intercontinental ballistic missile but still a reckless move. “It shows why we are working so closely right now with the Chinese… to try to get this under control and aim for the denuclearized Korean peninsula,” Mattis said. US-allied Syrian groups form civilian council to run Raqqa US-allied militias in northern Syria announced on Tuesday the formation of a civilian council to govern Raqqa after their planned capture of the city from Islamic State militants. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which include a large contingent from the powerful Kurdish YPG militia, has advanced towards Raqqa with the help of air strikes and special forces from the US-led coalition. The SDF - made up of both Kurds and Arabs waging a military campaign against IS - said local officials had been setting up the council for six months. A preparatory committee met “with the people and important tribal figures of Raqqa city to find out their opinions on how to govern it,” the SDF said. (Reuters)

Turkey must investigate referendum doubts - European Commission The European Commission called on Turkey on Tuesday to investigate “alleged irregularities” in Sunday’s referendum boosting the powers of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “We call on the Turkish authorities to consider the next steps very carefully and to seek the broadest possible national consensus in the follow-up to the referendum,” Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said. “We also call on the authorities to launch a transparent investigation into these alleged irregularities,” he said. Nearly 9,000 migrants rescued in Mediterranean over weekend – IOM Nearly 9,000 mainly African migrants were rescued in the Mediterranean this past long weekend, after setting out from Libya on unseaworthy boats to try to reach southern Italy and a gateway to Europe, UN aid agencies said on Tuesday. “This was an overwhelming search and rescue operation by all sides involved,” Babar Baloch, spokesman of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told a news briefing. IOM spokesman Leonard Doyle said that better spring weather had encouraged smugglers to take migrants out of detention centers in Libya. At least 900 migrants have died or have gone missing while attempting to reach Europe by sea so far this year, while 36,000 have been rescued, against 24,000 last year, Doyle said. (Reuters)

Palestinian prisoners’ hunger strike leader sent to solitary Israel’s minister of public security says a prominent Palestinian prisoner has been placed in solitary confinement for inciting a large-scale hunger strike. Gilad Erdan tells Israel’s Army Radio Tuesday that Marwan Barghouti was punished for “instigating mutiny and leading the hunger strike.” Activists said more than 1,500 of about 6,500 Palestinian security prisoners joined the open-ended protest. The strikers’ immediate demands included better conditions and more contact with relatives. Barghouti was arrested in 2002 during the second Palestinian uprising and convicted on multiple counts of murder. Israel charged him with directing suicide bombings and he was sentenced to five life terms. Erdan says the prisoners receive all privileges required by international law. (AP)

Army declares loyalty to Maduro as Venezuela braces for giant demo Venezuela’ defense minister on Monday declared the army’s loyalty to President Nicolas Maduro, who ordered troops into the streets ahead of a major protest by opponents trying to oust him. Venezuela is bracing for what Maduro’ opponents vow will be the “mother of all protests” Wednesday, after two weeks of clashes between police and demonstrators protesting against moves by the leftist leader and his allies to tighten their grip on power. The center-right opposition has called on the military to turn on the president amid an economic and political crisis. But Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said the army “confirms its unconditional loyalty to the president.” He made the comment before thousands of rifle-carrying members of the pro-Maduro “Bolivarian militia” at a rally outside the presidential palace. Talks on Syrian opposition’s participation in Astana underway – Kazakhstan The countries acting as the guarantors of the Syrian ceasefire are holding talks on the participation of the Syrian armed opposition at the international meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov said on Tuesday. “During the previous rounds of the negotiations, Turkey did its utmost to make sure that the armed opposition groups take part in the talks here,” TASS quoted him as saying. During one of the rounds of the Astana talks, Jordan was represented as an observer and also ensured the participation of the Syrian armed groups based in southern Syria, according to Abdrakhmanov.

Putin talks Donbass ceasefire with France, Germany & Ukraine The heads of the Normandy Four countries have held telephone talks on the developments in eastern Ukraine, the Kremlin said in a statement Tuesday. President Vladimir Putin talked with the leaders of France, Germany and Ukraine. The four “welcomed the agreement on resuming the Easter ceasefire achieved during the session of the Contact Group on March 29 and pointed out the importance of fully sticking to it,” the statement said, referring to the recent agreement in Minsk on the cessation of hostilities in Donbass, which was first set for April 1 and then moved to April 13 after both Kiev and self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Lugansk and Donetsk blamed each other for violating the ceasefire. With the phone talks held days before the first round of the French presidential elections on Sunday, the Normandy Four leaders specifically expressed hope that the diplomatic efforts will continue in this format after a new French leader is elected.

Austria urges EU to halt accession talks for Turkey after vote Austrian leaders said the EU should end talks over Turkey’s 30-year-old bid to join its ranks after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won a controversial referendum on gaining further powers. “With what happened yesterday, [Turkey’s] membership prospects are buried, in practical terms,” said Chancellor Christian Kern. “We are entering a new era,” the Social Democrat told reporters in Vienna. EU aid to Turkey to help it advance towards membership was now “obsolete,” he added. Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said that after the Turkish referendum, “we can no longer simply return to business as usual.” (AFP)

Syrian envoy slams US airfield attack ‘message’ to N. Korea Syria’s ambassador to North Korea denounced US “history of interventions” on Monday and said sending a “message” to North Korea with an attack on a Syrian airfield was irresponsible. Tammam Sulaiman said the US was wrong to send messages with attacks on other countries. “Whatever they do, this is clear aggression,” he told Reuters. “If they want to keep sending messages, then you are not talking with a responsible state or a responsible administration.” Asked to what extent North Korea supported the Syrian military in its fight against rebel forces, Sulaiman said there was “nothing of military cooperation.” He said the “acquisition of nuclear weapons should not be a goal” for any country. Does Ahrar al-Sham even exist at this point? When was the last time they took major part in an offensive? Be glad it wasn't a sudden sharp pain when you were training. For DOMS just take it easy, and stretch lightly, not much else you can do besides that and wait. For me sometimes it would be 2-4 days of insane soreness if I hadn't worked out in a while and then suddenly did a rough workout.
