I think that the Japanese culture breeds emotional detachment and social isolation, which has to do with complex societal causes.
Let us remember that Japan's history is one of near constant violence until post WWII. If they were given back that pride in their heritage Japan would get real violent again.

Their military culture was killed by us Americans after WWII. Their younger generation is starting to grow out of it, but after the shit Japan put America through in the Pacific, we had to get them to tone it way the fuck down. Unfortunately, the pendulum has gone a bit too far in the peace direction which is leading to the emasculation of their men. Ideally they need to bring it back to having a more patriotic stance, but in the American inwardly focused tradition, i.e. "Make Japan Great Again" rather than "Make the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere Again"
