Ottawa won't take actions against tariffs

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Can someone give me a rundown on Trumps reasoning behind this?

Seems like a completely unnecessary battle

It's in line with his brand of protectionist policies promised during the campaign.

He's been trying the same thing with Germany

If you fight for your interests, you lose.

Fucking everything is going to be so expensive now. Ugh. Everything is going to be tariffed to death. Aren't there plans to tariff imported cars?

>Soft wood

I'm sorry to hear about your surplus of soft wood Canada.

Would you like us to send you some Viagra?

There is no battle. Canada already said they will just roll over and take it.

> obvious shill on Sup Forums at 1AM EST
yeah. i'm sure you buy a lot of cars

Why buy Canada trees when america is perfectly capable of producing our own.

Breaking News: Trudeau to fly in over 200 wood cutters from Africa to help with crisis.

>Aren't there plans to tariff imported cars?
buy a honda. they make more cars here than anyone else

I understand that my leafy brethren, but specifically why would he go after your wood industry? It seems so arbitrary

People are pissed. The only thing Ottawa could do is cut off oil/water/ electricity going across the border.

Well fuck auto correct for not capitalizing America.

this is good. I enjoy seeing fellow canadians poor and unemployed.

me too

Most of them are privileged anyway.

sheeeeeeit, why is Trump sucking Washington and Oregon states dick?? they voted for HER fuck them. I rather buy cheap wood from the lead than support Washington and Oregon state.

>Why buy Canada trees when america is perfectly capable of producing our own.
this is why i voted for the man.

>There is no battle. Canada already said they will just roll over and take it.

You mean Americans

The tariffs aren't paid by the supplier but by the end user

THE LEAVES WON'T BE BLOWING THEIR WAY FROM THE TREES AND ACROSS THE BORDER TODAY, JUSTIN

Okay, so do so.

It's 11 mountain time m8

You mean Toyota but yeah you're right. I like a lot of cars that are only built in Japan which sucks. Was planning on buying a Lexus LS in the next few months

PAY SOFTWOOD DEBNTS!

I will

Dude libs are extremely concentrated in the pnw. Get out of fucking Capitol Hill and actually see Washington. Everyone is redneck as fuck

Buy a Cadillac, hell even Buicks are well equipped and attractive looking nowadays.

Or be a man and buy a Mustang or Challenger.

Trump was mad that American dairy farmers were getting short sticked, but in reality their own overproduction deflated the price for american milk and we protect our industry here from cheap american milk as we actually ship a lot out to Europe.

If we let the Americans in it would kill our local industry AND make us default with our other trade deals.

Trump's solution to that is to start a trade war for no reason on lumber.

I don't care I spit on that blue fucking state. piss on it's wood as well.

It's actually as a response to supposed improper protectionist policies subsidizing Canadian softwood. NAFTA

This, we'll sell our lumber to China. It's Americans who will end up paying more.

Putting a tariff on a natural resource like lumber is stupid -- you import lumber, then you use it to build things, then you export the things that you build.

Put it this way -- would you put a tariff on oil so that your own citizens pay more for gas? It's the exact same thing.

Trump has no idea what he's doing, the only people who will get hurt by this are some Canadian forestry workers (middle income white people in small towns) and Americans looking to build cottages, houses, etc.

(((Cui bono?)))

How in the fuck do I even buy canadian Lumber in Mexico? I need like a SHITTON of it and it's scarce here compared to the US.

Chileans get their lumber here so leafs can do it too.

It's not like we're lacking in trees leaf, more production will spring up here to compensate and you can sell chinks wood to build murderous elevators.

how do you export a house?

...

>Trump's solution to that is to start a trade war for no reason on lumber.
>no reason
he wrote a fucking book on negotiations. obviously it going to be used as leverage for something else

Don't y'all build everything out of mud and corrugated metal with like two pieces of wood?

Lol where are you from. Washington is the best state in the union

I'm looking for a luxury car, I don't want a shitty brittle plastic interior made by fiat.

Canada isn't allowed to export dairy products. It's the price to pay for having supply management and barring all foreign dairy imports.

I don't like it, we end up stuck with expensive products and 0 competition.

We need the leafs

>it's ok when we protect our jobs
>it's not ok when you protect your jobs
Got it

>I'm looking for a luxury car, I don't want a shitty brittle plastic interior made by fiat

Then the only true answer is something German or something British. We make muscle cars masquerading as luxury cars, but I like that.

luckily i dont care about canadian workers at all

lumberfag here

this is mainly going to affect cedar, as both inland red and western red cedar is best from Canada/vancouver island area. the mills are trying to stay 'in front of the market' and have increased prices dramatically in several phases over the last month or two. ultimately bad for the end user/contractor who will catch the end of things. this is the reason the building industry/wood products market saw a massive increase in March when everyone decided to stock up (particularly in the hot markets - CO, TX and CA)

while most of the industry is pro-trump, it's clear the expiration of the SLA will be a net negative for american chain too. maybe I'm not fully redpilled on his trade strategy, but this seems like an odd hill to die on right now.

from Ohio.

Washington best state in the Union. you been watching the History Channel too much

Buy American, Hire American.

You guys do know that Trudeau placed a 273% tariff on the importation of gypsum board / dry wall.. right?

Made every single US product so expensive that the Canadian drywall plants & gypsum mines are in 24/7 operation and barely keeping up with demand.

It is not.

The provincial governments of Canada own huge tracts of land which they lease to forestry companies at very low rates. It's either jobs jobs jobs or crony capitalism, depending on how you look at it.

The Americans have been crying foul for years, claiming it amounts to a government subsidy on the forest products they export.

You'll regret the meme-tier grill on the front

Kind of a joke answer. If the market was there you would have already been doing it. This is going to hurt the Canadian lumber industry in a major way and i'm willing to bet hurt your currency pretty badly.

not as easy when the actual resources (IRC & WRC) are most plentiful accross the border. buyers do have a preference

bingo, this guy gets it. good post.

the original softwood lumber war is why so many Canadians grew up being taught to despise the US.

thanks Trump, now another generation is going to get the same thing, and nobody will benefit

canada sends us less wood. we either start making more of our own or import cheaper.

literally the first time I've ever heard any try to claim Washington is the best state in the union. I don't even like Alaska and id say even it's superior.

Thats wrong.
Who pays the tariff depends on the market. And the u.s. has no shortage of lumber

certain trees only grow in certain forests, user.

that's what most people in this thread don't understand, you're not going to be able to domestically produce a natural resource

I literally would not shed a tear if Canadians died over this.

I would point out your own protectionist policies regarding your dairy industry was the first shot, but we heavily subdidize our own dairy industry. That is why we over produce dairy.

Who cares?

Anyone who has worked in civil engineering knows Canadian wood is cheap shit.

One time I got a shipment of 200 tons of lumber, and we had to send back 65% of it because it was warped, waned, and splintered.

One time we had to cancel an order because the cunt in British Columbia warned us of a beetle infestation.

Fucking cunts. Lumber from N/S Dakota, Washington, and Oregon is god tier but the nips buy it all up with a premium.

You have pissed off China, Mexico and Canada

Looking at this map it really doesn't seem like a good idea

What's hilarious is the fact that at this point, with the state of our country's politics, I actually become happier everytime someone sticks it to our government. I just want to see them squirm, and watch our pussy, effeminate leader feel the heat.

I'm not even a super political person. I'm a centralist classical liberal, and probably closer to a libertarian than anything. I just hate our leadership so much that this makes me smile, even if it financially hurts me.

I hate this country. I hate everything it stands for. It's one of the worst places in the world. Imagine always being on the outside looking in--historically, politically, culturally, artistically. Canada has never written a notable work of literature, or produced a groundbreaking piece of art, ever. There has never been an artistic movement either started or realized in this country in all of history.

I'm moving to my ancestral homeland of Italy as soon as I can. I'll unironically probably kill myself if I stay in this country.

What's the problem America? Can't take the competition?

What trees do you have that we are in shortage of?

our dairy industry is tiny and isn't legally allowed to export anything into the US, it's not threatening your industry (which is massive) at all

dairy should be off the table

this is another part I left out. of course the CBC spouts that the govt. bids out timber from their land (aka crown timber) at market price, but it just means the market has the same syndromes of an oligarchy. if more REITs snatched up crown timberland it would probably be a different story.

Because Canadians are fucking niggers and Justin has attempted to do far worse. Dairy is next, get ready to take it up the ass.

i hope it does kill the canadian currency.

1. all my money is in bitcoins
2. a low CAD brings lots of tech jobs here.

Canada wanted to renegotiate NAFTA right away, showing clear signs of being weak bitches.

Trump is now gonna squeeze them dry because they can't unleash a wave of central amerishits upon murrica.

While it certainly isnt standard more and more houses are getting prefabbed structure components. This has been going on for things like barns too.

Punishing the rural folks who working in forestry for the actions of retarded city liberals would be very good now would it?

China is playing ball and buying coal. They don't want a trade war. If we hurt their exports we hurt the average Canadian

Lumber testing done in like 90s or early 00s found that Canada had better wood for structural construction. It has created a large demand for Canadian timber and this has angered mills in the US.

t. engineer

sounds depressive and full of self-hatred, user, read your own post, you've got some mental issues to deal with that aren't related to politics or Canada at all

We've gotta get wisconsin guys! gogogogogo

>implying we couldn't use a different softwood.
>implying our northern states dont have those trees.

the easiest way to put this:

our softwood = shittier than lots of Canadian softwood

many end users and traders have made it a habit to build with quality cedar, doug and hem fir from Canada they could get at a value and now that's going to cost them more / dramatically shrink their options.

>american joking about someone else's construction styles
Rich.

>if you kill your economy it wins

Cedar

Trudeau is finished

>start making more of our own
that's always the catch-22 of protectionist policies, it's a net benefit... for the next generation

>Went to gas station
>Candy bars the small ones $1.50
>Bottles of pop and tea 2 dollars each
>Be me as a kid 20 years ago
>Candy bars 40 cents
>Bottles of pop and tea like 89 cents.

Its already happened.

UNF TAKE THAT LEAFS

wow so cringy

>get paid in usd
>syrupbux crash
lel

Well I think the point is our dairy farmers want to export to you guys not the other way around.

especially in less humid areas where building is exploding right now (CO and CA, primarily) - the moisture content is MUCH friendlier to the longevity and ultimately, structural integrity of the wood. it's so regional that unfortunately US wood doesn't cut it for the whole country

I need it for wooden pallets that are exported to burguerland

>150 years of confederation
>150 years of arguing over lumber with USA

Business as usual.

Canadian producers use very little softwood, but in order to get at the tree species they do wish to market, they harvest the softwood and dump it at what many American producers consider, below market value, hence the pressure on the federal government to impose Tarr ifs.

your dairy industry is doing fine as it is.
our dairy industry is doing fine.
if we changed the rules, ours would get crushed overnight and yours would get a marginal benefit

doesn't seem fair

There is a demand for Canadian timber because grading agencies found that Canadian versions of the same type of timber had superior engineering properties for the same price.

This has nothing to do with a supply of timber in general but a supply of a specific timber that is better and of equal price. This is purely a move to get American contractors to use American timber.

How dare you put American pallet makers out of business. When we renegotiate NAFTA were going to address this. Also we are going to make you guys get all your tacos from taco bell.

(You) #
This is exports map

China may be playing ball but Canada seems to be owning the field

Yeah fuck off right now. You probably don't even know who FĂ©lix Leclerc is. You know nothing of Canada.

Canada and the US have virtually no trade deficits between each other (within reasonable fluctuations).
This policy is basically just trades war.
I can only hope we actually do finish building the harbours on the East coast and the new one in BC so we can stop selling the US so much crude oil.

I mean Im generally anti tariff and protection for most insustries but I cant see why your dairy industry is special but our lumber industry is not.

Don't you mean "Arbortrary"?

Wrong.

They do increase the cost of imported goods, this is true. However the idea is to force those imports to cost more than producing the shit here, thereby creating jobs and the product domestically. That's an overall net gain for the customer, not a loss you globalist pig

Very much so to both. I study literature at a graduate level at one of the top schools here. A person can't really realize how bad things are here, culturally, until they've really entered into the world's traditions. We have pretty much nothing, artistically, compared to what's come out of our neighbours to the south and Europe. Our history has been too peaceful to produce any sort of distinct culture here at all. We didn't even technically have a national flag till the fucking 60's.

I'm also drunk as fuck. I just hate the fact that pol shuns art, because nothing has actually redpilled me more than reading the world's masterpieces, and especially the Greco-Roman classics. That shit will make you proud of your heritage.

Hey that's rich, Spanish rape baby person.

I actually don't. Who is that? An author? Tell me what I should need to know of Canada, wise sage. I've been all around this country, and it seems to me to be a whole bunch of mentally sedated idiots and nothing.
