what is 'poor'? i never had to starve, and only really had it bad when a double whammy of divorce and housing recession hit my family. if anything, those hard times with my dad taught me about whats really important in life.

i may not have had cable or a new video game every month, but i learned that family is much more important than all that. in the end, the only good use for surplus cash (ie not spent on bills and basics) is organic food and supplements.

But I'd say at least half of the "poor" (which you can hardly claim anyone in the western world is really poor) is that way do to their own behaviors that they are unwilling to change.
