If it's Rochester, move to a nesting town outside of the city (Leeroy, Geneseo, York, Avon, ect...) And commute to work.
Rochester is a total shit show, but the areas outside the city are decent to live in, and most of the towns have highways to Rochester.
Americans are not really different from anybody else. They may be more hospitable then you are used to, that's about it. I've lived in the Northeast, Southwest and Southeast USA and the people I met were not really that different from each other, or people from around the world I other nations that I have lived in or visited (petroleum brat and now in sales, I get around).
