Sup Forums art thread

Hey bros,

Ever since the widespread interest in Million Dollar Extreme: World Peace (especially this skit: youtube.com/watch?v=Brdx7kmxx2I), I've been curious about the enthusiasm that Sup Forums, a decidedly reactionary and traditionalist board, showed in surreal and abstract art.

Do you guys have any other recommendations? I think it's clear that audiences are increasingly dissatisfied with the influence of commercialism and progressive politics on art, so there's definitely a lot of room for reactionaries to work.

I'll post a few examples of this vein of art that I think Sup Forums might like later in this thread.

Spring Breakers (2013)

> directed by Harmony Korine
> stars James Franco and a bunch of disney starlets
> score done by Skrillex (actually pretty good)
> film about a bunch of degenerate college students going to spring break who decide to start robbing and murdering people
> basically the entire film is the director pointing out that modern degenerates are disgusting people and that commercial party culture encourages self-destructive and violent behavior
> aesthetic as fuck

>world peace will never have a season 2
>tfw goyimswim won

Magic Mike (2012)

> directed by Steven Soderberg
> supposedly about a bunch of male strippers in Tampa
> actually about how the recession/gig economy emasculates young men for the purpose of economically exploiting them
> routines are more funny than erotic
> protag is a skilled dancer who really wants to work in a trade (carpentry) and later realizes that degeneracy (polyamory, sex work, etc.) is ruining his life

It's incredibly sad - the show struck me as a more politically-minded Wonder Shozen. I can't imagine that it's high school musical theatre aesthetic would be expensive to produce.

Surrealism is a symptom of absurdism, which is a variety of nihilism, which is for edgy teens.

By the way, the music at the end (being sung) is supposed to be a song called Cop Killer.

Cabaret (1966 musical, 1972 film)

> musical about a cabaret club in Weimar Republic Germany
> protagonist is a whore who later chooses to abandon her planned marriage and abort her child
> most content to drink and fuck themselves to death while the Nazis come to power
> entire cast is gassed at the end of the show

Wonder Showzen? I heard the comparison Sam made and only saw the similarity with its offensiveness.

And besides, I'm sure Sam agrees, Wonder Showzen is probably the best show ever produced after the 2000's.
Beats Breaking Bad n shit for me.

> Surrealism is a symptom of absurdism, which is a variety of nihilism

I disagree. Surrealism attempts to capture intangible, but still important, elements of the human experience. Dreams, spirituality, morality, virtue, emotions, etc.

I think it's far more nihilistic to pretend that humanity is some sort of cosmic accident and that we're limited to a merely physical experiences.

> Wonder Showzen is probably the best show ever produced after the 2000's

I agree, though The Leftovers is getting close.

Forgot to post this

I think these could have easily showed up on MDE:WP

Blackhat (2016 film)

> directed by Michael Mann (Heat, Miami Vice)
> Chad computer scientist travels the world killing NEETS
> subtext is that the modern world is an oppressive surveillance state and that technological advancement has led to nihilism and insanity
> protag is only able to prevail because he retains connection to the physical (his body) and spiritual (his relationships) worlds

Yeah, I don't think world peace is absurdist or surrealist, it is a show that makes alot of connections and tries to ask questions( though not all the time).

This sketch is definitely a story you can think about and it saying that people should care and be angry before its too late, which is far outside of nihilism.

And damn the cop killer version has a real good song entrance.

I think it's surrealist but that's a 'lefty' territory. Besides, whatever your category for it is, that show was amazing and only going to get better

I like the Cop Killer version, but I think that Hey Moon does a better job capturing the melancholy impotence of the prisoner by the end of the skit

Leftovers is eating shit a little because of the appeals to pop culture. The fundamentals are okay and Matt is a great character and Carrie Coon is a babe, but if you wanna get woke on christian fiction you should read Gene Wolfe's Solar Cycle, CS Lewis, and T.H. White has some good kooky views on christianity in OaFK

While not surreal, I'd recommend The Young Pope. It has some surreal moments, but I'd imagine that whatever it is, it's Sup Forums approved.

>No, it's not edgy fedorafag-tier reddit garbage.
>No, you don't have to be Catholic/Christian/religious to see the artistry in the show.

It's mesmerizing and touching, and the main character constantly admonishes modern man for their rejection of traditional values. Whether he's right or wrong is partially up to the viewer, but as a Christian with great disdain for what the Western world is becoming, I tend to agree with him.

Also, Jude Law is mesmerizing. I'd post some scenes, but they'd lose their impact if taken out of context. I highly recommend watching the show without checking YouTube first.

This moment was pure kino

So you've seen it all? I loved the entire sequence leading up to his audience with the PM, and the scene itself.

Just an amazing show. Episode 5 and 8 covered all the bases, but I think either 8 or 9 was my favorite.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it.

Tbh I think that the surreal moments/disorienting cinematography fits very well with traditionalist aesthetics. Icon paintings and high renaissance art wasn't photorealistic - it was intended to inspire awe. Surrealism/abstract art detach audiences from their familiar surroundings and allow them to better appreciate the intangible.
