Redpill me on Linux

Is Linux a way to avoid the botnet and prevent Apple and Microsoft from taking your monies and data? Or it is just a meme?

It's a giant waste of time

>t. Bill Gates and Tim Cook

but seriously, whai though?

It's all kinda fucked in different ways on each platform.

If you want pretty Linux desktops that compete with the look and feel of macos, there's some eye-candy distros out there like Ozon OS, Elementary OS and a specific Chinese distros Deepin OS (with English install option as non-default).

>Is Linux a way to avoid the botnet and prevent Apple and Microsoft from taking your monies and data?

Yes.

You should be using it because it provides a better personal computing experience anyway. Windows is basically stone-age level tech compared to Linux, literally the ONLY argument you can give in Windows favor is that it can run Windows-only proprietary software, there is literally nothing else it is better at than Linux, and you're using a backdoor'd data-mining OS.

Yes, install Gentoo to get the best of it

MUH GAMES THOUGH

A person asking basic questions about Linux is in no way even close to ready to install or use Gentoo.

Not really. Ubuntu was confirmed to have NSA backdoors in it and Mint has rumors.

>Ubuntu was confirmed to have NSA backdoors
Any link on that senpai?
In some distributed binaries or in the source?

It's a lighter, less useful Windows XP

Sure, the community's awesome and each distro is fun to play around with, but the final red pill is, it's no harder to tamper than Windows or Mac.

Essentially you're relying on an unpaid / probably demotivated community to keep your family porn photos protected.

i use it because i don't play manchild vidya games and linux works fine for my day to day needs

yes install gentoo linux it is the best for keeping out the NSA

Lol. Kept flipping my phone. Goddamn it

you're already on the botnet if you post on Sup Forums

the google recaptcha when you post ties your computer and browsing habits to an internal account where they build a database on. if you have any connecting google services, it will link itself to your identity

Not just Ubuntu. Linux in general was compromised by the NSA tools. As far as we know, only FreeBSD installs were not. A bunch of NEETS who work on linux for free aren't going to beat entire states that are trying to break this. If the NSA can do it, there's no doubt other government agencies out there can too.

I've been trying out linux every couple years for a decade and it still sucks.
linux developers seem to have fucked up priorities.

The majority of developers of the Linux kernel and core components of the system is done by developers from multi-million dollar publicly traded companies.

Redhat
IBM
Google
Intel
AMD

All huge developers of GNU/Linux.

>but the final red pill is, it's no harder to tamper than Windows or Mac.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "tamper". This is a vague non-technical word. Windows however is proprietary software and far more restrictive than Linux. OS X is a Unix system made of partially free open-source software, it is much better in this regard.

>It's a lighter, less useful Windows XP

This and your entire post is a great example of uninformed people smugly talking about things they don't understand.

I dunno, what do you like to do with your computer, user? If all you do is shitpost and other web type things, linux will do just about as well as any other OS at that.

If you want to play games, you're going to be in a world of hurt, as you struggle with WINE settings, and don't let the fanbois tell you different.

Hardware support has gotten better over the years, but graphics drivers, although they actually work now, are usually far behind the Windows and Mac drivers in terms of features.

I've decided personally that I'm not upgrading to Windows 10, when it comes time to reinstall a new OS, I'll switch to one of Ubuntu's LTS releases.

Better design philosophy, more useful depending on what software you need. For most people it could be a drop-in replacement for most if not all their daily computer tasks aside from some specific items (software developed only for windows like autocad, most video games).

Baby duck syndrome is the biggest hurdle for most people seeking to switch to it (but nobody who succeeds regrets the effort spent). You can always dual boot or run a VM if you do have need of windows software that won't run in WINE.

Also Freedom with an F.

>t.dev / admin / user

I use linux for everyday life for the past 5 years. It is the best OS for programming or doing any serious computer work, the only place it is weak is in the video game/CAD fields which is too bad.

>A bunch of NEETS who work on linux

The MAJORITY of development for the Linux kernel and core compents of the system come from multi-million dollar publicly traded companies. Such as:

Redhat
IBM
Google
Intel
AMD

The botnet is installed at a hardware level. It doesn't matter what OS you use.

>no one mentioning TempleOS yet
VERY disappointing desu.

I'm being a bit Sarcastic about the neets. They're still not going to beat the agencies that are paid unknown amounts of money to break those systems.

Linux admins and developers are paid decently well.

You only need to connect with god anons.

Linux is shit, buggy as fuck, always crashing, I hate it.

Are there even any known instance of remotely accessible ones? I'm sure they developed some for targeted operations, but I don't think they'd be widespread among the general population (if at all).

If Linux crashes it's your fault.
That's a fact.

Linux is literally communist tier driven in its principles and design ideology. Open source shit will literally always be inferior to that which is produced for consumers, much like how private schools are always better than public ones, but the advantage with Linux is that you atleast get to understand you aren't being fucked over by secret code inside of it stealing your info and selling it to the highest bidder like Microsoft.

So, Linux is Commie tier with shit performance made by code monkeys, but you atleast can be safe in knowing you aren't being fucked over by big jew.

Yeah. I'm sure most consumers aren't aware of that. IIS is trash.

99% of peoples complaints about Linux are their own fault, or because they don't understand how things work.

you meant to say GNU/Linux right user?

>not knowing the most basic of Sup Forums memes

otherwise known as gnu plus linux

or gnu plus hurd

Confirmed botnet.

Checked

You are both retarded and completely misread my post, or didn't read it at all.

I use linux myself 90% of the time. I only boot into Windows to use proprietary software that is only available for it.

I was stating the objective fact that private property/software will always perform better than public property/software because of the laws of economics, but the comparison between private business and public business with private software and public software ends there when it comes to open source, because while open source might have shit code, you atleast know exactly what is happening under the hood, so you can be assured and comfortable knowing your Operating System isn't fucking you over.

The hardware on the other hand...

if you aren't a hardcore pc gamer, there is no reason not to use it.

If your a dev it's cool

Otherwise, does not protect you if you have Intel chips in your PC as the hardware itself has a backdoor

>using GNOME

Get out

>shit code

Wine will solve that problem

>not exclusively browsing Sup Forums

Only good Linux is RedStarOS

just don't use computers at all.

Your argument is based on the assumption that money is the only / best way to motivate people, as well as that commercial success correlates to the quality of the product.

Neither are inherently true, so neither is your statement.

i know the feeling, hey come to my church one day will talk about it. :D

Intel is just the one we know about.
It's reasonable to assume there's something similar in AMD and other chips as well.

Last I hurd, the hurd didn't exist just yet. Because some fennoswede faggot was too smart for his own good. Thats why I advocate BSD all the way or maybe that chinaman kernel that supposes to be all about that FS.

If you use your computer primarily for playing games then you'll struggle with Linux.
It is superior to Windows in nearly every other aspect. Anyone saying otherwise is simply too lazy to actually learn Linux, and gave up on it when it didn't hold their dick while they wrote their name in the snow.

Any source on this?
I know a lot of chips have the potential to be exploited in some ways, but AFAIK it's extremely rare that it can be done remotely (without being combined with other exploit, also remotely).

>Not having a comfy Apartheid Linux distro

...

Linux is pretty nice if you're not much of a gamer and can stomach it's steep learning curve.
You'll always be learning more about how computers work using Linux, but GUIs make basic tasks very similar to Mac.

There are some great free tools for Linux that you can't get on Mac or Windows. If you want to actually do something illegal with a computer other than download CP and buy low quality crystal meth off of TOR, you're gonna need Linux.

Check out Linux Mint and Ubuntu, very friendly distros.
Kali Linux is cool if you want to explore the world of being a haxx0r.
The nice thing about linux is you can boot into it off a USB stick, SD card or optical disc if you have access to bios. You can try it before you buy it so to speak.
Dual booting Linux and Windows is another option for gamers who want to be command line wizards on the side.

If all you do is shitpost on Sup Forums, then it's worth checking out. Even if it's just to control when you shut your computer off to update.

>muh gaymes
Grow up.

i understand how to check quads; checked

>Grow up.
Never desu. It'll remain my primary form of entertainment forever.

Pretty spot on.

>The nice thing about linux is you can boot into it off a USB stick, SD card or optical disc if you have access to bios. You can try it before you buy it so to speak.
You can do the same with windows.

those backdoors didn't make it through the testing, they were removed.

reeeeeeeeee

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>the hardware backdoor meme
What are they going to do?
Siphon your transitors?

Don't use it because you want to hide from big brother, use it because UNIX is a superior and free alternative to Windows/Mac.

...

Always wanted to be in the 1%. I do most of my work in vector apps. Linux could be fucked to have one that works well with CMYK or PANTONE colors. Until they get it the fuck together, I'm stuck on Windows.

there is nothing cyberpunk about that shirt.

I only use Ubuntu, but I don't use my computer for gaming. You can photo edit, I do a lot of writing, and other productive things. If you take like a day's worth of work anything you do on Ubuntu can be exported to windows. So if you use Libre Office you can export it in a manner to get it on Microsoft Office.

As for anyone saying it is compromised, it sort of is, but not nearly as bad as Microsoft. Microsoft techs work directly with NSA and other Intelligence agencies so they work hand-in-hand to give it backdoors. With any Linux distro the code is open-source so NSA is always trying to find backdoors after checking the source code. It's much harder to hack into Linux distros. If you use Microsoft your shit is completely compromised. If you use Linux distros they can compromise it, but it it takes much more work.

In summary if you want to use Linux dual-boot it rather than just completely switch. (meaning have your computer choose to run either windows or linux on start-up) Next Linux distros are far more secure than Windows, but nothing on the web is completely secure (TAILS is pretty close to complete security though). And finally it will take a few hours to get used to and especially to learn how to transfer things from your Linux distro to Windows, but it's very simple and everything can be found through Google.

OS is probably the last way things are going to get you. App's, search engine reporting, browser auto feedback, etc are just as bad. This goes without saying distro's like Ubuntu are partnered with amazon to basically store or mine everything you type.

No one cares

Basically Linux is for people who want to be able to say shit like this in Linux threads on Sup Forums.

Everyone working on Linux Distros chooses what they code. So you have a thousands of malcontent workers for Windows just waiting to go home at 5 vs. a bunch of dozens of extremely dedicated people on Linux working whenever they are motivated. Generally speaking the code on Linux distros is much better. The laws of economics also tell us that the most motivated win and Linux distro developers are far more motivated so this post only shows that you don't quite understand who works on open-source projects or why.

Who da fug recommends all those subhuman distros?! Arch Linux with Plasma desktop aryan master race!

No one cares

Technically speaking anything can be hacked it's just a question of who has the time and resources. Linux distros are way harder to hack though so it's stupid to compare them to Windows, but to say they are unhackable is a lie.

Oh look a retarded leaf thinks that public enterprise works better than private enterprise.

...Literally anyone can contribute to open source projects, and if you take a look at any Linux distro you'll fine a plethora of shit.

Like, holy fuck dude, Debian is a great example. I use Debian primarily as my OS, and a faggot created System D which fucking causes nothing but trouble, but it's so integrated into the OS nobody can get rid of it now.

If you have any programming skill what so ever, when you go and look at the source code behind most open source shit you'll find it's made by fucking retards that don't know what they're doing.

I don't even know why I'm having this discussion with you since you're some kind of a retard who is artistically obsessed with Linux for some reason.

I didn't even say Linux was bad. I said/implied that Windows has a wider selection of software with better performance as an OS because it was made to please consumers in the business world, and Linux doesn't have to please anyone because it is contributed to by hobbyist idiots, which is reflected usually in the quality of the code.

Since we're on Sup Forums I was thinking that a basic economic concept like this would not be hard to understand. You realize you're literally using leftist tier arguments to shill for Linux, right?

Linux isn't perfect, and Windows isn't perfect.

Windows performs better, has more quality software, but you don't know what is happening under the hood and you don't know if you're being sold out.

Linux has some stability issues with less quality code, but you know exactly what's going on under the hood.

That's all I said.

Now, you idiotic buffoon, tell me what you don't understand about these two simple explanations and I'll try my very best to break these extremely easily graspable concepts down to terms so laymen, a kinder-gardener can grasp what I am saying. I'll even go as far as using crayons and markers in my example.

STUPID

Not anymore, thanks to the concerted efforts of redhat, microsoft and canonical. Unless you use gentoo, you're living in a botnet.

waste hard drive space by installing a linux distro
this way, when you work, you're locked into windows and are more focused on the job
leave linux for all your trap/futa manga
compartmentalize your shame, and become more efficient!

...

>windows performs better
it literally does not. windows 7 and 10 both run like shit. I can dual boot in right now and confirm. windows is fucking trash. even OSX is an acceptable argument but windows is just fucking trash. you are delusional.

This

Intel ME and it's AMD equivalent for their cpus. Also hard-drives and their micro-controllers and miniature cpus. Open source hardware is a non-existent field.

Thread literally asks if using any Linux Distros is worth it, I answer, and this is the shit you come up with. I hope this is bait or your mother should have aborted you.

shit code is always better than your criticism that it is shit.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Agreed. I switched to Ubuntu to keep myself off vidya, but stayed because Windows 10 is far slower and Ubuntu has free apps that are better than the comparable Window's ones that cost hundreds of dollars.

>System D

The final redpill

linux is literally, we wuz kangz: the os

>Linux doesn't have to please anyone because it is contributed to by hobbyist idiots
Do you realize that CERN uses Linix? Do you realize that the Internet runs on Linux servers?

kill yourself

do you realize cern uses linux just because C translates into Chinese in Windows?

As someone who has used Linux for over 10 years, it's a great hobby/work OS, but not a great desktop OS.

As far as Sup Forums memes go, if it uses systemd it's compromised. Then again, there's hardware that also has backdoors in them and some applications that have been compromised (e.g. Firefox, Notepad++), so unless you're running an ancient build, an OS that doesn't rely on systemd, and carefully selected what software you run then by Sup Forums standards you're fucked.
