Engineers in the US used to propose and/or build awesome and massive public megaprojects routinely, like the interstate system, NAWAPA, GRAND, the Space Program, etc. Now there are some projects like that, but not nearly as many, and they aren't of the same scale and are mostly scientific non-infrastructural endeavors, like ITER or CERN, and the majority of megaprojects now seem to be coming out of China and other countries. What exactly happened which stopped the pursuit and construction of such projects?
