Obviously the machine is not useful because it's not fast, it's not accurate, doesn't have that much force, and the point of contact is very small, but these things can be fixed by just designing a better mill. The point is that a better mill would work and could be made without him necessarily having to design 15 iterations to prove it.

Most people who go camping bring a tent, matches/a lighter, a pot, etc. Even among those who go camping, only a few of them would know how to make a sturdy shelter, create utensils, start a fire, etc. if they didn't have modern day tools.
