I can't really think of anything that stands out about this year. The music, film and any cultural stuff was blah as fuck. The economy was maybe the only really bright point. I had a good-paying job with no degree. Lebanon started blowing up, so there was speculation that there would be a draft to protect Israel.
I would put the start of the slow decline at around 2003. It was after the surge in patriotism after 9/11 when we realized we were now fighting a war for oil against a country that did not likely have anything to do with the attacks on us. Various Soros-funded organizations infiltrated or even started anti-war groups and took advantage of people's frustration with it, planting the seeds for everything you see now. And as for when it started going downhill faster, that may have actually just a little later than I remember.
