But even family owned farms operate in an industrial mindset. It's all down to getting as much yield per acre of whatever product you're supplying.
The methodology changes depending on what label you want to slap on your product. You'll be able to sell organic for a higher price but regulation makes it more expensive so you have to figure out a way to do it as efficiently as possible in order to drive down costs.
Small farmers have to be as industrious as possible in order to survive. It helps that we can sell food to stupid fuckers who think we sing lullabies to pigs and chickens.

The rural environment is superior to the urban environment for physical/mental health reasons, but I cannot stand rural people.

I get that, but when 90% of livestock farming education has to do with preventing disease and etc. in the stock, and an educated farmer can raise and get high yield on his land using resources that are less volatile, why not go that route? I think we know {{why}} this happens. If more of us were to at least partially subsist on our own land, using a Chestertonian model, as a culture I think we would be much better off.

It'd absolutely be a better situation. However, in countries which are heavily urbanised there wouldn't be enough land for each person to survive off individual sustainable farming methods. Also people are inherently greedy which throws another spanner in the works. (not a commie but some people are a bit too obsessed with money and it's a bit vulgar)
I'm in the fortunate situation where my family and I can and mostly do sustain ourselves as we grow most of our vegetables and have pigs and chickens. We have guns for hunting and I can't think of a better place to be if the world goes to shit as we'd be able to feed and defend ourselves
