Yes it is expensive, but as first user said you are wasting their time for a common cold when there are much more sick people that they need to tend to. Had you been in a socialized healthcare country, you would have to wait weeks to months to see a doctor. After the doctor saw me, she told me "we can't prescribe anything for this, because it requires a primary physician to monitor you for adverse reactions to the medication. Here is a referral to a doctor than can give you this treatment." The bill for being seen to confirm an easy self-diagnosis, and told that they cannot treat me for it was $400.

1. You went to a walk-in clinic / urgent care for a non-emergency. Walk-in clinics are not for primary care. They are for non-life threatening emergencies. You paid $400 and waited 3 hours because walk-in clinics are for people too lazy to look up what kind of doctor they need to see and open the phone book.

2. You thought the walk-in clinic could help you. If you had spent 5 minutes looking up what the treatments for toenail fungus are you would have seen that antifungals are dangerous and that you have to get them from either your primary care physician or a specialist.

3. You didn't go to Walgreens first. Even the most braindead patients usually tell us that they went to Walgreens to try the over the counter treatment first. Lamisil is like $20 OTC. Sometimes is doesn't work, but sometimes it does, and holy-shit, it's only $20.

Amoxicillin is a controlled medication. If anyone sells it to you without a prescription it's illegal. Antibiotics are also the one type of medication where you don't want to fuck around with generics. I know a guy with dual American-Canadian citizenship because he grew up in Saskatchewan where his parents live on a farm. He used to be hugely in favor of adopting a Canadian style healthcare system in the US. That changed when his dad was kicked in the face by a spooked cow and spend 13 hours waiting with a life threatening injury to see a doctor.
