Polygraph use in law enforcement

how legit are polygraph tests? has anyone here ever taken one?

they're legit for seeing if you're experiencing a physiological event, such as an increase in blood pressure or heart rate. polygraphs are not admissible as evidence if that's what you want to know

This user is correct.
Polygraphs show your response to questions not yes or no this mother fucker is a liar.

Complete bullshit.

Easy to trick and even easier to fail.
You are asked if you killed someone and you are reminded how sad you are they are dead triggering blood pressure to rise setting the machine off.

They are mainly used as a bluffing tool to get people to confess to things that are to stupid to know that the polygraph doesn't work

>he hasn't taken a polygraph training workshop

lmao you should try it soon desu

but in the end this post is ultimately correct

>They are mainly used as a bluffing tool to get people to confess to things that are to stupid to know that the polygraph doesn't work
bingo

soldierfag here, can confirm

>how legit are polygraph tests?
They will only tell you how stressed the person is. That can be a relevent info but that alone won't tell you much.
Your average person is already pretty tense when answering questions from any form of authority, so don't expect much.

They aren't admissible in court. My husband has worked for many federal agencies, and US military and can 100% dupe a lie detector.

they're not legit

you can easily fake them if you understand basic breathing techniques

They are a great preliminary tool for questioning and that's it. They are wrong often.

>They are mainly used as a bluffing tool to get people to confess to things that are to stupid to know that the polygraph doesn't work
Yep, you suggest to a dumbass(see: most criminals) to do a polygraph they'll start confessing because they think it works. It's the same concept as lying to suspects saying shit like "the other guy told us everything, make this easy on yourself".
Don't never believe shit you hear in an interrogation room.

I think they are mostly used to tempt naive people into being interviewed without their lawyer present to 'prove' their innocence.

I didn't become a police officer because I knew I wouldn't pass the polygraph.

I would work in the government sector, but concerned that the polygraph may bring up questionable shit.

They can be a useful indicator but with training people can trick polygraph tests. He'll it's been done before by multiple people.

God you're retarded.

No. They're 100% pseudoscience. They can easily be beaten by anyone.

I took one for a job one time. Was breddy uncomfortable. I was asked if I ever looked at porn. I said no. I'm sure I got BTFO.

That's what he said, you blithering fool.

Legit as fuck. Just make sure that if you have anxiety disorder, that you're diagnosed years before you need to take one.
t. LEO

>with training people can trick polygraph tests.
Anyone that has ended up requiring a Poly likely isnt capable of training for shit. Their lack of planning is how they ended up there in the first place.

They're not admissible in court and I know drug dealers that now work for the sheriff's department. so there's that.

Are you fucking retarded?
No they aren't real science. With enough practice anyone can beat them.

Read "the lie behind the lie detector". They are bullshit.

>With enough practice anyone can beat them.
Anyone that would put time and effort into beating a poly couod land a normal job and not need to turn to crime.
If they're a higher level criminal, then there will likely be a larger investigation and plenty of evidence against them.

for the average joe who thinks they work yes, but people like Aldrich Ames have been able to evade them, so there's not really a point if you're trying to determine if somebody's a terrorist/foreign spy/saboteur

Tell them you'll take it, it's usually a bluff

Sociopaths don't need training. This thing is meant to measure nerves and if you don't feel anything about the things that you do then you'll pass.

This. Depending on the circumstances, they're likely using it as leverage

WE NEED TO DO THISSS

>if you don't feel anything about the things that you do then you'll pass.
If youre a sociopath, the type of crime you commit will likely not require a poly for any reason.

This.
Can confirm.
Tech support for a police department.

tits

>Anyone that has ended up requiring a Poly likely isnt capable of training for shit. Their lack of planning is how they ended up there in the first place.
Military enlistees and cop cadets get poly'd. And it doesn't really take training to beat them, you just have to plan ahead and remind yourself that the lie is actually truth that happened. Go into it believing your own bullshit and you will be fine.

if you clench your butthole the whole time yo will beat a polygraph

Stop spamming this you fucking faggot.

This. All the info we get is from bluffing people that the machine said they were full of shit. "Now, if Im going to help you, you need to tell me the truth."

Take some drugs to throw them off. Meth of PCP shoud do it.

10'ish years ago
>be me
>poorfag ofc
>work nightsgift at a money exchange office
>no money left overnight, few hunnit dollars, basicly guard the place against vandalisation
>video cameras inside and outside mandatory-by the law
>ffd some months
>take my shift as usual
>30 min later all former staff, the owner, his wife, son, God himself, all rush in the office
>'user, did you see somewhere 10k greenos ?'
>'Fml wtf is going on !!??'
>they somehow lost 10k during an exchange with some dude
>after few minutes genius strikes me
>'Errybody chill the fuck out!! Check the fucking cameras!!'
>'They don't fucking work user!!'
>No police cause the exchange was not registered for tax reasons
>Boss says he'll take us all to the lie detector to find the truth
>take test
>told I was the only lier.. 90%sure I stole the dough
>said to the boss to take this shit to the polis or fuck off
>I quit
Also lost trust in the lie detecting institution

I took one a while back. According to it I was lying about not being a felon, addicted to illegal narcotics, lying about my mother's name, and had falsified data on my clearance application.

>nervous about interview probably caused the felon part
>friend recently died from drug overdose
>mother was abusive
>nervous about completing paperwork

They just told me most people "fail" the polygraph on a few point and that they only use it scare off people who are actually trying to hide something.

>tfw I have sociopathic tendencies, and I believe in earnest of lies I say.

>took a polygraph for a ts/sci clearance.

Local law enforcement polygraph examiners are typically inexperienced, and if you get a minority interviewing you they most likely got there through affirmative action points. I wouldn't sweat it. State-level is probably the same thing. FBI and other top secret polygraph examiners might be a little more experienced, and the exams a little more in-depth, so it would be harder to beat them.

I took one for a major city in the US, and I lied my ass off when it came to drugs and petty crime. I committed some minor offenses that never came to the attention of law enforcement in my late teens, and I smoked pot up until a few months before I joined the military. I lied about that when I joined the military, and I realized I couldn't just start being honest now that I was joining a police department because I had already lied on one government application, so I just kept the lie going.

Anyway, I read up on how the test worked, what type of reaction they were expecting for what questions, and I lied and squeezed the dick muscle at the base of my dick to get the body tingle going for the questions I knew they were expecting a physiological response on, and I passed with flying colors. Even if the detector indicates you're being untruthful, they still need to get you to admit you're lying. As long as you don't cuck yourself during the interview and admit you lied (which would probably preclude your employment) all they can do is guess you're lying. If you're going to tell a lie, don't make some elaborate story up on the fly. Just deny, deny, deny. If you never did drugs, then you don't have to come up with a story about that "one time" you smoked weed, and you don't invite additional questions like how many times, where were you, do you still keep in touch with that friend, you listed them as a reference, etc. If you never committed a crime other than a minor traffic violation, you don't need to come up with an elaborate explanation for your actions.

Pseudo-science made popular by shitty TV shows.

How to game a poly
>step 1: get a tack
>step 2: get shoe
>step 3: put tack in shoe
>step 4: step on tack during test
>step 5: ??

I think polygraphs are 60% accurate at catching liars. Meaning its not any more accurate at it than your average person with people skills.

The polygraph itself is about as accurate as reading scattered chicken bones. The trick to the whole thing is that looking at a machine and implying that you are lying may motivate someone who is actually lying to tell the truth.

I heard one of the ways to trick a polygraph is to try and be anxious/stressed during the control questions.

I remember watching an episode of penn & teller on the polygraph. These things can be easily beatable.

Can confirm.

CIA spook currently on a covert op to undermine the Irish government and start a coup.

Anything you see that says hat they work is a lie by the company that makes them, autism tier delusions, they are only used to make the target confess under stress with lies. Keep cool while on it, you'll pass every time.

What did you read user

I want to hear more desu

They're not admissible in court, so it doesn't really matter.

Electrical engineer here.

A polygraph works through multiple types of sensor. Example of such sensors are conductivity (or resistivity) of skin, heart beat rate, breathing rate, and possibly more. Those sensors are "calibrated" at the beginning of the test, to get base readings, i.e. inital conductivity of your skin, your intial heart rate and so on. Once the device is calibrated, the sensors stay at work, measuring the conductivity, heart beat and so on. Those values change as time goes on. Someone sweating will cause a change in conductivity, which is picked up on the sensors, same for heart beat and breathing. From those data, some moron is making a conclusion. So as far as a lie detector goes, it can tell a lie as much as there is a correlation between sweat, heart beat and what ever other sensors are in there have to do with lying. If someone is wearing extra clothes, as the interview will go on, they might start sweating more and more, which makes the reading completely useless. Same goes for someone's heat beat. Lets say he came to the office running, he's heart beat will slow down and the data is once again useless. The whole device depends on someone having a physical reaction after lying (such as sweating or raised heart beat). This does not necessarily mean they are lying, but just that they have a change of some basic bodily functions. You could be completely innocent, but if you are stressed during the interview, it could show a false positive, while you could be a complete sociopath devoid of emotions, and pass the exam while being guilty. Overall it's completely useless and that is why it is not admissible in court

TL;DR
Lie detector measures different shit on your body, which does not necessarily corelates to you lying. Its a scam.

The trick is to convince someone that you know they're lying in order to extract an actual confession which would be admitted in court.

Dad is a police officer, he said they are complete shit and dont work.

Bible belt sheriff tier science. Up there with Christian science.

>and not need to turn to crime
Likely they are not committing crimes out of NEED per se...
