I'm having trouble with a concept many friends argue is a flaw of capitalism.
When some smart people legitimately accrue vast amounts of capital, if they are intent on doing evil, it's not hard for them to then buy out public institutions (which turns into cronyism a la early 20th century US) or buy out private institutions like media and others, by which point these wealthy individuals may be indistinguishable from tyrants.
Are there any checks to this happening? Any flaws in this line of reasoning? Does the prevalence of the Internet and open-source products make this sort of think impossible in the 21sth century?

These are not flaws inherent to Capitalism, but rather issues arisen by democracy and government.
Democracy creates incentives for media brainwashing. The moment you give the power to some people over others you will have multiple "influencers" trying to sway this power their way. Without democracy all brainwashing can do is make people violent, but they would never have legitimacy anymore.
Buying out public institutions, obviously, is the fault of having public institutions, again, this is not inherent to Capitalism, but rather our current disfigured crony capitalism created by government intervention.

For example the quasi-monopoly of the media in today's world is actually caused by government arbitrary licensing. You can't expect them to accept no-contract because there's a huge risk for them in doing so. It only happens in farm work and with immigrants.
Employers know immigrants just want to work, while the average european is likely to try to milk them through the legal system under the pretense of muh workers "rights". Practice minimalism. Earn as little as possible to have some savings and get by.
You should try to make your own business without declaring that income and therefore evading taxes if you can. As an employee it's very hard not to be taxed.

The bigger the country the more civic-like any nationalism will be. Libertarians advocate decentralization, which means breaking up larger states into smaller ones. The smaller the country the more ethnic-like whatever nationalism there is tends to be.
Civic nationalism is the only kind of nationalism possible in huge countries like the US or in the EU, while smaller countries like Switzerland (its government is also highly decentralized) will tend to have more specific culture-centered forms of nationalism. That's because the more voters there is in a jurisdiction the less control they have over their government.
