Take a word that everyone deems bad, then redefine the word so that people you don't like encompass all the defining characteristics of that word. They did the same thing with racism, and now being a "racist" can mean anything from putting on a hood and publicly executing a black person, to asking a nonwhite person where they were born. Both of those are assigned the same adjective, and in people's minds that makes them equally bad in some sense. In some circles, just being white is the only prerequisite to being "racist".
