I'm going to start a community "militia", with my family and some of my closest friends, all of whom live closeby, and I would like suggestions on top of my ideas.

>Requirements for joining the Nevada Free Peoples Armed Militia -always be polite, professional, courteous, and presentable -become combat medicine certified -be in basic physical wellbeing -be willing and able to assist your neighbors in any crisis situation -be of good character and moral solitude -have no bias to your fellow humanity based on race, gender, religion, political affiliation, or any other disposition that is considered unnatural by society -have a surplus of water, food, tools, and materials -own a semi automatic rifle, a sidearm, magazines, and ammunition for these weapons, and recieve professional training on how to employ such weapons -own medical supplies, and have access to at least a basic medical kit at all times, and have the training to employ them to stabilize a patient in serious or critical condition.

i love how the media has made the word "militia" have a negative connotation over the past several decades.
You absolutely need a secure way to stay in contact with each other over long distance that is not dependent upon power grids or cell towers. Try to find encrypted radios (not scrambled, but encrypted). Due to government regulation of these you will likely have a hard time locating them.
If there is some sort of emergency (natural disaster, riots, terrorist attack, etc) and you do not have secure comms that function independent of external infrastructure then despite whatever preparations you have made you will not be able to co-ordinate and your training and organization will be for naught.
I don't think having massive stockpiles of food/water/ammo is particularly important. Disturbance of civil order lasting longer than a few weeks is not something that a few civilians are going to be able to grapple with effectively and preparing for it is a waste of time and money. Neither is it particularly important to have every whiz-bang piece of military kit, a $5000 tricked out AR, and an ammo fort. Again, the scenarios in which you would conceivably want this stuff are not scenarios in which a handful of civilians are going to survive. A basic AR, 5-10 mags of ammo, and a plate carrier are all you need.
What you should invest in though is night vision. It is a huge advantage. If there is an emergency and power is lost you will be fucking shocked at how dark it can get without electricity. Being able to see is essential to maintaining security in these situations.
