I encourage you to simply do the same and accept as well as acknowledge the finite nature of life when doing so.
I took care of a terminally ill grandparent for a few years as the primary caretaker as all of his children moved away. My father traveled to much for work to do it himself.
Life is short. Tell your dad you love him and simply try to have the best relationship you can. If you have concerns encourage him to eat and live healthier and explain you want him around for a long time.
