I think they intentionally are using this story to muddy the waters and peel people off of paying attention to the Russia hoax. (Not that there isn't a real, significant part of the story here, but that the way it's being "prepped" in the media is bizarre and indicative of ulterior motivations)
Basically the Russia hoax is winding down becasue guys like Comey are part of much larger scandals relating to Obama's time in office and these larger scandals are going to be crashing into reality shortly. I agree the logic of the story is particularly weak and seems out of place with the direction their narrative had been heading. Many of the hoaxers are behaving desperately and contra to how they would behave if the lies they have been shilling for months were true.
So CNN used this to be exactly the kind of story that makes people on both sides of the aisle throw their hands up in frustration because they now no longer know what to think. Hoping people will just stop paying attention kek. Desperation time at MMFA/Shareblue/DNC is happening
