Main streets include Irving Park (horizontal) which is mostly safe day and night. Just don't go near or beyond the Irving Blue Line or the Kennedy Expressway at night unless your life depends on it, drug deals and vagrants happen and lurk there. Over by Lakeview there's mostly roving drunks, but you're safe. Towards the lake there's homeless people but you aren't in terrible danger. Ashland is fine provided you aren't by Roger's park of the south branch. The city's North and South sides are divided by river branches, which aren't hard to map out. A simpler rule of thumb is downtown is central, above is north, below south. You should stay away from Western more south and don't bother with California unless you're close to Irving Park, otherwise you risk going to Humboldt Park. Crime happens everywhere here but the South and West sides are where the fucked up shit you're hearing happens. Really you should take time to look into Chicago neighborhoods over streets, because shit changes in a heartbeat from one street to another.
