My point is that as an institution, the church is corrupt and obsolete. Belief in God on it's own is relatively harmless, but organization on a global scale leads to the church having too much power. I'd rather there be small secular groups. It may start off small, but as atheism grows there could be potential for great community bonding, so long as some idiot doesn't decide to start some atheist church and completely miss the point.

It is very necessary, humans are social creatures and being surrounded by like minded individuals is a very good thing for your brain. Having friends, knowing your neighbors is incredibly important. I find that the reason so many people can't deal with a crisis of faith is they can't get through the nihilist stage which follows, but if you can come out the other side and find purpose, then yes, religion can be safely abandoned. Many choose science, hence the atheist scientist stereotype.

If there is to be an atheist movement, it must be a moralist one.
