liberal democracy is actually a very recent phenomenon. Many of the precepts were developed by proto-communists in the Age of Enlightenment and 1790's revolutionary period.
Then later through in the 19th Century, Marxist-influenced socialists and social democrats as well as liberals took these principles further. Then by the 1950's, after WWII and the defeat of fascism it got subverted even further by post-modernism and critical theory taking over intelligentsia.
