I post this all the time and it's always overlooked. This stuff really kicked off out of the ashes of the Committee on Public Information. Every advertising agency and major media corporation for one. Media exists to sell influence through advertising space. Whether that is to influence you to buy something or to think something they profit from it. Pushing psychologically impactful content into the world to provoke anxieties or to engender some feeling of reinforcement in a target group is what demographics in media is all about. We want to appeal to "X" audience. We will supply content that audience is interested in and evoke a reaction that we can reasonably expect them to have from this content. Advertisers sell products to be featured alongside it that correspond to those reactions, either relieving that anxiety or reinforcing that positive self image they are imparting to that audience. Those strong emotions and corresponding counter programming influence your subconscious to associate the product with security and fulfillment. That is the game.
