I think the reason people do vote conservative when they age is because when they're younger they think they're invincible, they're more energetic, idealistic, progressive and have a more open mind set. All that erodes when they become old. They start to feel weak and need defending by others. They know they're going to kick the bucket soon so they lose all that idealism and feel a stronger desire to conform to gain that protection. They also start to hate what the youth represent because they can no longer have it, so they go down a path that will spite the youth.
