I am very saddened to see old photos and movies of old LA. Seeing all the well-dressed white people, walking with their kids; the well-maintained roads, etc. Now Google Streetview will show squatamalans lining up outside the welfare office.

First off, it was Mexico, not Spain. There were very little people in the area. It was completely unpopulated. The Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo gave Mexican citizens in the area the option of staying and getting US citizenship or leaving for Mexico. Since Mexico was a shithole then (like now) and the Mexican government neglected them in the first place, most chose to stay, My ancestors were among those in New Mexico.
Before the 1970s, California was 80% white. Most of the Latinos here today came after 1965 (when the Bracero Program ended) and most of the illegals here came after 1986 (the last amnesty).
