Guys I Just saw B-2s fly over my house. This has never happen before.
This is all over the natural gas pipeline that was supposed to run through Saudi Arabia. They have balked on the deal and Iran basically sent the 2 Billion dollars Obama shipped to them straight to Qatar so they would send the pipeline through Iran instead.
This increases the cost of the pipeline by not having it land based, but Qatar doesn't have to worry about Saudi Arabia over taxing the line or stealing it altogether.
This part of the world is new wealth, but a lot of it. The Saudis are aware that crude oil has peaked for a while, and they understand the need for natural gas will continue to grow.
This is an economical war, like the rest of most wars. I am more a tactical analyst though, Order of Battle, movements, TTPs, etc...

So if things are going to get really ugly, there won't be much of a warning since Iran's communication is mainly internal, they're forces located at Bandar Abbas, Kish, Abu Musa and Siri already know what's going on.
More than likely the IRGC controlled dhows will start laying down mines from Hengam all the way across the Strait to Kumzar. Sea states will determine how quickly they can mine the entire strait, and what type of mine they use, but their efforts will most likely cut off the Strait for days or possibly weeks.
The IRGC flies a few squadrons of F-4s that get good sortie time on a monthly basis, they patrol their 12 mile barrier from the coasts, and their small attack vessels practice swarm tactics on the Carrier Strike Group that is inside the Gulf.
Once they successfully mine that strait, the US Navy will be trapped in there for better or worse. So they might be waiting for the CSG to swap out with the incoming fleet and mine when the Gulf has been abandoned.
If the CSG is inside the Gulf it will most likely force the US's hand on choosing a side. Iran also flies UAVs throughout the Gulf as well, I will not confirm that they are armed, but they have a normal flight schedule established now.

That's not entirely correct, I agree that sending a few frigates out at night would cause a scene, but they wouldn't use military water craft.
They would use fishing dhows, which are one of the oldest boats known to man and the most prevalent ship in those waters. They could easily due this with during normal fishing times without causing too much disruption to the shipping lanes.
Now that the traffic has decreased since the "embargo" had been constructed, there aren't a whole lot of ships trying to pass through the strait.

If this kicks off, and this is a big if because a lot of things are at stake here for lots of people in that area. If Iran is attacked or is attacking a Sunni nation, I highly suspect they already have some Quds force led units moving through the LOCs and headed that way. It would be hard to fight KSA in a ground war without armament of course, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be effective at all. If this does pop off, there will be a massive land grab going on, and little sects will begin to pop up claiming ground gain and most likely they are just looking for a prince to pay them off so they can have their land back.
This is a good, but complex question. If you asked me who would win between a IRGC soldier and a highly trained Royal Guardsman soldier in hand to hand I would have to say the IRGC fella. They have very strong training regiments.
However, if we are going to break it all down to the Order of Battle level and geographical placement of forces it's going to be a toss up of sorts. Just keep in mind, the last thing Iran ever got from us was the F-14s. Which, are still great aircraft...if you can keep them maintained, they have been canabalizing them for parts for the past few years.
Iran has a bigger army by double the size, KSA has 5 times the budget, the Iranian navy is ALWAYS training so they would get the win in that column. KSA has the benefit of US forces being embedded with them for training purposes which is a major benefit. But, Iran has some of the best paramilitary groups in the world. For this onslaught, I give it to Iran due to their no give a shit factor.

I doubt Iran will start the war. They will probably bolster defenses with more underground ballistic missile systems and join the EEU and SCO, which they are interested in. Iran is interested in trading with the EU, not with UK or USA. In fact, I think Iran welcomes more isolation from UK or USA.
