The Conservative Party went into this election with a small majority; not huge, but workable enough that they could get things done. Theresa May called the election because she wanted a bigger majority for the sake of Brexit. A bigger majority means a stronger voice when debating negotiation stances within Parliament, and a stronger voice within the negotiations themselves.
But she failed. Labour have scooped up 30-odd seats, the Tories have lost about that much too although they remain the largest party, but neither have a crucial majority in the House of Commons, so now - just 10 days before the formal Brexit negotiations are due to start - no single party has a strong enough governing mandate.
Thanks Theresa, you've done a wonderful job securing a strong and stable government to take us out of Europe.

that's not how it works, but a second election would be the result. the opposition would have 14 days to try and form a government and get a queen's speech through, but that isn't going to happen so would be a waste of time.
best scenario now? may stays in to hammer out a brexit deal and take the economic fallout, then resigns in three years? two years for whoever to repair the damage and prepare for 2022.
