In reality, I don't think Comey could've called a press conference to acknowledge this without looking like an asshole in general because it isn't proper for the FBI to comment on ongoing investigations.
I am actually under the assumption that Trump knew Comey was leaking memos and on top of that unable to call a press conference to publicly acknowledge that Trump was personally not under investigation (which was hampering the administration's agenda which was elected) which led to his dismissal.
To add to that, I actually think Trump eventually realized that there was nothing more that he or Comey could personally do anymore to kill the narrative so Trump fired him to "force" him to talk publicly about the investigation.
My takeaway from all of this is that somebody had to act, Comey couldn't, and Trump had to do something to save the administration from a potentially years long investigation which turned out not to be aimed directly at Trump.
