Ansar al Islam were roaming free in supposedly government-controlled areas He definitely showed favoritism towards his sect.
Also, even if most of the soldiers and civilian leaders where shiite, the army and party leadership were all sunnis and from even his extended clan.

Relations remained cool until Bashar al-Assad became President of Syria in 2000. Syria strongly opposed the occupation of Iraq in 2003, stressing the necessity to maintain the independence of Iraq and support its political process, demanding a time table for the withdrawal of the foreign troops from Iraq. Syria has also played the host for more than 2 million Iraqis, providing refuge for them.
Bashar was a lot more reasonable than his father and improved Syria-Iraq relations significantly. I wouldn't say he was an enemy of Saddam, far from it.
I know he did not gas Kurds because he was an "ebil dictatorz", I read somewhere they were supporting soldiers from Iran probably the reason they got the gas treatment. That is why I wanted to confirm from someone more knowledgeable about this situation.
