>We support the right of the United States citizens of Puerto Rico to be admitted to the Union as a fully sovereign state. We further recognize the historic significance of the 2012 local referendum in which a 54 percent majority voted to end Puerto Rico’s current status as a U.S. territory, and 61 percent chose statehood over options for sovereign nationhood. We support the federally sponsored political status referendum authorized and funded by an Act of Congress in 2014 to ascertain the aspirations of the people of Puerto Rico. Once the 2012 local vote for statehood is ratified, Congress should approve an enabling act with terms for Puerto Rico’s future admission as the 51st state of the Union. t. 2016 Republican Platform prod-cdn-static.gop.com/static/home/data/platform.pdf
>There are 3.7 million American citizens living in Puerto Rico. As citizens, they should be entitled to determine for themselves their political status. I am firmly committed to the process where Puerto Ricans might resolve their status according to Constitutional and Congressional protocols. I believe the people of Puerto Rico deserve a process of status self-determination that gives them a fair and unambiguous choice on this matter. As president I will do my part to insure that Congress follows the Constitution. The will of the Puerto Rican people in any status referendum should be considered as Congress follows through on any desired change in status for Puerto Rico, including statehood. t. I agree styx, pol is slowly turning to reason, but a bunch of inbred stormfags still don't understood what's gonna happen and what choices republicans have

Didn't they do the same thing in 2012?
If I was a republican, I wouldn't do this unless I got a red state out of it as well. We need an Alaska for this Hawaii.

Don't worry, Jefferson is on its way.

Yes. It happens every time, but nothing happens.

Why would they vote away their sovereignty? The US has no article 50. They are now a non country like every other US state.

If I'm not mistaken the electoral college will stay at 538 votes and PR 6 will be siphoned from other states like California. I might be wrong so take this with a grain of salt. Also what about the language difference between the mainland US and PR? Will that be an issue at all?
Isaac Wood
>23% turnout >non-binding vote
Brody Powell
I doubt it would be a huge issue, I mean we have tons of Spanish speakers already and I assume that statehood would encourage the learning of English at least a little
Nolan Evans
>Q1. who was Rubio's biggest donor? >Q2. whose hedge fund holds a shit-ton of PR debt?

Daily reminder that if you didn't support Rubio in the republican primaries your IQ is most definitely in double-digits
Wyatt Hall
Nah they'll be like Florida. Them getting admitted by a Republican president and house will turn them even redder.
Michael Hill
>>People move to the nearest states, turning them blue if enough blue voters disperse then there's more room for red voters to breathe and come in to. but keep in mind it's incredibly hard to just relocate on a whim like that.. think a little more realistically with these situations. all those blue voters going to other states and managing to live there long enough with the kind of debts and shit work experience they have? yeah alright man whatever you say
>Also what about the language difference between the mainland US and PR? Will that be an issue at all? i wouldn't accept any option other than total lingual assimilation to english but it isn't a big deal -- most already understand english well enough.
>>Non-binding Referendum the republican party, and trump, said it would be honored. since republicans control everything i don't see why they wouldn't -- if they renege on it, they'll piss off everyone who did come out to vote for it in PR. they'll become a state eventually. they will never be independent. so when they do become a state, it might as well be under republican control. if you want a blue state, all you have to do is renege on statehood as republicans.
Jace Baker
they do, congress said the ydo and this power belongs 100% with congress this is styx's proposal
And think about it, if you're a republican and does not do it, democrats will do when they get power back
Isaiah Foster
IIRC California, Texas, Florida and two blue states would lose representatives to PR
Jayden Anderson
Aren't they a Christian (eventual) state :D ?
Cooper Wilson
Why Texas? Are they trying to nerf our red state power?
Landon Hughes
There are rules on it. I guess some states are too small to lose representatives (only having 1), and with redistricting the larger ones would lose more
An user posted the calculations yesterday

How would Statehood for Puerto Rico affect the apportionment of House seats?
According to a report by the Congressional Research Service (CRS), if Puerto Rico were to become a state, based on a population of approximately 4 million, they would be entitled to six seats in the House of Representatives. As a state, they would, of course, receive two Senators.
The current number of 435 seats in the House of Representatives was set by the Apportionment Act of 1911. For nearly a century, the permanent number of seats hasn’t changed.
If Puerto Rico were to become a state, Congress would either have to:
Reapportion the 435 seats by giving six to Puerto Rico and subtracting seats from other states; Temporarily increase the size of the House until the next reapportionment following the next census; or Permanently increase the size of the House. Based on current information, a CRS report projects that the states that could lose an existing seat or not receive an expected additional seat after the 2010 Census in order to provide six of 435 seats to Puerto Rico include: Arizona, Missouri, New York, South Carolina, Texas and Washington. naturalresources.house.gov/newsroom/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=183105

I am completely in favor of this. Now the trash that collect welfare here can go back and collect on the island.
William Parker
Updated numbers Like any state, Puerto Rico would be entitled to two senators. Based on the 2010 census count, Puerto Rico, which has a similar population size as Connecticut, would be reapportioned five representatives. In order to comply with the current apportionment rules of the House, Texas, California, Florida, Washington and Minnesota, states with larger populations, would likely each have to give a seat to Puerto Rico. More importantly, data show most Puerto Ricans vote Democratic. It does not take a political scientist to know that the Republican-controlled Congress would not be inclined to give the Democrats seven seats.
good, i hope they take California's seats in the house of reps
Luke Taylor
Is this why CNN is pushing that "comedian" nigger off to Puerto Rico for the next episode? So concerned nigger can tell us how badly ebil whitey is opressing the dindu island spics?

Some things to remember when talking about Puerto Rico becoming a state: >Congress is under no obligation to admit states, even in those areas whose population expresses a desire for statehood. >The territory, if it has not already done so, is required to adopt a form of government and constitution that are in compliance with the U.S. Constitution. >The U.S. Congress - both House and Senate - pass, by a simple majority vote, a joint resolution accepting the territory as a state. >The President of the United States signs the joint resolution and the territory is acknowledged as a U.S. state. >The process attaining statehood can literally take decades; Puerto Rico has been trying for statehood for over 60 years. >Both Republicans and Democrats have reasons to deny statehood because they have done it in the past regarless of which party had legislative and executive power.
Isaiah Allen

Check also the french elections. Macron won bigly
>Congress is under no obligation to admit states, even in those areas whose population expresses a desire for statehood. Congress already said it would tho, and both major parties and the president agree with it. >The territory, if it has not already done so, is required to adopt a form of government and constitution that are in compliance with the U.S. Constitution. Already done >The U.S. Congress - both House and Senate - pass, by a simple majority vote, a joint resolution accepting the territory as a state. Republicans control everything, will vote in favor as they said they would. >The process attaining statehood can literally take decades; Puerto Rico has been trying for statehood for over 60 years. They couldn't set up a proper vote till now because faggots keep boycotting it and doing it illegally. This time tho the US government said they did everything fine, with no rigging of the questions or descriptions >Both Republicans and Democrats have reasons to deny statehood because they have done it in the past regarless of which party had legislative and executive power. Democrats will 100% do so when they can, and republicans know if they cockblock PR they'll just become another blue state, they'd be retarded to just throw them in the dem's hands. They'll 100% try to make them a state first to be more competitive, since this will happen anyway. If they're smart they might try to do what styx said and get a new red state too
David Cook
ricans are already included in the stats. 5 million in the mainland and 3 million in the island, all american citizens

They're not a sovereign country. They've been a US territory for ages and US citizens. If they get statehood however the US gains another blue state with 7 democratic electors, 2 democratic senators, and something like 5 Representatives.
Michael Lewis
Make no mistake, they will vote blue. They can't even keep their own house in order. Why are we even talking about this? Hell no. BIG mistake
Brody Nguyen
You stormfaggots will NEVER learn.
Whites aren't a land, they are a people. You don't measure the white race in meters of land you measure them by how many fucking white males there are (and only the males).

if there are 5 million people living in peurto rico and only 500,000 of them selected statehood, shouldnt we wait for at least a majority of the islands populatio to select statehood? isnt that how democracy works?

I mean on the one hand it's bad for conservatives if PR becomes a state.
On the other hand I still want it for some reason. Probably just because it'd be something interesting to happen.
