Was he a hero or traitor?

Neither or both.

He was the inevitable conclusion of a system damaged by the Gracchus reforms, which was the wrong answer to the social ills resulting from slavery and imperialism.

The system needed to be destroyed, so in that sense, he was a hero, but he also effectively set in motion the end of the republic and the formation of the principate, which was entirely contrary to the purpose of the republic and the removal Tarquinius Superbus. In that sense, he's a traitor.

I think the Marian reforms did more damage to the system.

> The system needed to be destroyed
What would you have replaced the system with?

This, but the senates unwillingness to do anything to help the majority of the citizens doomed it as well. Why would anyone side with a senate that hates you when your genera is promising something for fighting wars for him?

To understand what lead Julius to do what he did you, need to jump back in time and read about Sulla. He set the blueprint for younger guys like Julius

when you remove a cancer, what do you replace it with?

The problem in Republican Rome was cronyism of the senate. Generational crises were becoming frequent:
1. The attempted Gracchus reforms for wealth redistribution (around 125BC)
2. Marian reforms of the military (around 107BC)
3. Marian / Sulla civil war (around 80BC)
4. The first triumvirate (60 BC)

A major crisis every 20 years. It was beyond 4th turning crisis levels.

exactly, he basically let every single general know that all he had to do was march on rome with shit tons of troops and get whatever they wanted.

Without efforts Gracchus, Marius and Ceasar, Rome would have collapsead faster and easier. Incompetent politics of Senate and their stubborn refusal and blocking of good reforms was causing decline of roman army. Also it increased poverty with many people ending destitude.

So yes he was hero also Principate was better than republic.

yea it is really interesting to get down into the small details and see how one thing led to another.

...

The leadership of Imperial Rome was extremely patchy. Julius Caesars descendants were mostly not that good with the exception of Augustus. The crisis of the 2nd century was a century of chaos and poor leadership. By the time the 400s rolled round they were being conquered by barbarian (((immigrants))). Romulus Augustulus was more or less the last emperor of the west. It was only approx 450 years (from J Caesars time) before the system collapsed and became something else.

250 years of kings, 450 years of Roman Republic, 450 years of Imperial rule.

Could it have lasted longer?

Julius Caesar's grab for power was a betrayal of the ideals of the Roman Republic and his actions led to the decline of the Empire. He's most definitely a traitor.

It did last for another 1000 years. It was called the Byzantine Empire

Not in the West. :' (

the funny thing about the west is as early as 410 the barbarians were all "lets make Rome great again!"

can you imagine living in NYC after the bombs and wondering how the hell anyone designed those giant buildings.

Invaded Britain therefore a cunt.

hero. he was true to himself.

Hero. End of. And fuck all of you Trump haters. Go suck a dick.

Trump is the new Caesar and after 2018 this will become clear. Screencap this post.

Also: fuck libshits.

Dang, imagine all those happening threads...

While he won't be leading a hostile army into DC, he's already signaled he has the military. He trolled the media into advertising this.

He's not a general. He's a businessman, and America's business is business. Just like Rome's business was war.

>he's already signaled he has the military. He trolled the media into advertising this.
