It's supposed to be representative of Iron-age germany I think? I wouldn't know much about viking chants and such. Presumably, there was some liberties taken (hence why you can hear a 'HEIL HITLER' periodically), but plenty of cultures have chants and such that sometimes sound pretty wild.

I've honestly never heard another band that sounds like Heilung. Sometimes you'll see groups that incorporate throat singing like Monsters of Shamisen, but Heilung has it combined with such utter intensity.

Neofolk is a good genre too, but usually a lot of it is less primal, much more based on traditional rock, folk, and post-punk.
